A week ago, we presented the most significant weapons from “The Taken King”, which notably shaped Year 2. In the comments, we read in response: Fine and good, but the most important weapons in Destiny still came from Year 1!
Therefore, we now want to rekindle nostalgia and present eleven “Year 1” weapons that made a huge impact in the first months and quickly attained cult status. These weapons made a grand entrance into the world of Destiny and wrote their own stories.
Gjallarhorn – The weapon everyone wanted
Let’s start with the exotic rocket launcher that absolutely must be on this list: Gjallarhorn. No matter what this hefty piece was called, whether Hornet, G-Horn, Yolohorn, the “golden crowbar”, or “weapon with the most wolves”, everyone wanted it. Because Gjallarhorn was the solution to all problems encountered in Year 1 of Destiny.
The “Year 1” Gjallarhorn was a tracking rocket launcher with a high explosive velocity that dealt an incredible amount of damage. The reason was the perk Wolfpack Rounds: Upon detonation, the projectile split into tracking scatter rockets that dealt significant damage to enemies in the vicinity. Tactics were unnecessary. The Titan merely deployed his bubble, and everyone fired Gjallarhorn at the boss. The fight was over in no time.
Any Guardian wanted to possess such a weapon – and had to, if they wanted to play. In social networks, having a Gjallarhorn was often a requirement for being invited to fireteams.
In short: Year 1 was all about this rocket launcher. The entire community was in a Gjallarhorn frenzy. Those lucky enough to have it drop were in good spirits in Destiny. Guardians without loot luck hoped for Xur, but the Exotic vendor was stingy with the coveted weapon.
Already in the second week after release, the Agent of the Nine brought Gjallarhorn, but back then many Guardians were not ready to give up their exotic slot for a rocket launcher. Only shortly after did the realization come: They had let slip through THE dominant weapon.
It was not until August 14, 2015, that Xur brought Gjallarhorn a second time. This day was celebrated a year later as “Gjallarhorn Day”. No other weapon in Destiny has a “birthday” like it.
