In Destiny , the story of a retiree is making the rounds and touching the hearts of fans, including those at Bungie.
Twitch streamer Lucent_Beam sometimes takes a newbie under her wing during her streams, invites him to a raid, chats with him, and spends time together. In one of her recent streams, she picked up someone very special whose story is now moving Bungie and the hearts of fans.
During the conversation, it turned out that the supposed newbie was a retiree who plays Destiny very differently than most of us, who inform ourselves about the game in forums, googling for guides and hints.
Destiny: This story touches thousands
The newbie shared his story during the stream:
- He is a retiree
- He has spent 600 hours in Destiny, has 3 characters at 380, 376, and 371
- But he has never done a Nightfall strike or completed a raid with them. He has never looked anything up online or checked anything.

Destiny without Googling – is that even possible?
- Normally, he plays solo. Recently, however, he has searched for a microphone and made friends with another older gentleman. He told him how infusion works. That was a big step forward.
- He prefers to play with auto rifles, which he can also handle when his hands tremble. His favorite exotic is Dragon’s Breath, because it leaves such a beautiful trail of flames while he aims at his main target

The puzzle of the Strange Receiver solved alone – took hours
- He solved the puzzle of the Strange Receiver and the Sleeper Simulant alone by trying codes for a few hours every day until one worked.
- He thinks of Xur as a nasty guy because he bought Legacy Engrams from him for a long time and never got a current exotic out of it.
- He has been in the Crucible 12 times. He enjoyed the matches, but he feels like he is only serving as bait, drawing enemy fire.
In the end, the man said: “Yes, the game has actually saved my life. My wife passed away in Christmas 2014. My son 9 months later. I am raising my 11-year-old granddaughter; no one else from my family is left. I am retired, but the game keeps my mind sharp. I mean, I feel like I’m living here. I have vivid dreams of being here. They are really exciting. I have the most exciting time of my life when I am here.”
On Reddit, the story of the man whom Destiny gives so much has already received over 5,000 upvotes. Bungie also shared the story on their Facebook page.
Yes, people over 50 also play video games. And for many of them, this second world means a lot:
