The MMO shooter Destiny is full of secrets. Especially the Vault of Glass presents the Guardians with some puzzles. Now, a reddit user has examined the “song” of the Oracles closely and shown a fine ear.
The Vault of Glass is the first raid in the Destiny universe. It was the first real challenge for all players who have been around since the beginning of Destiny. The Guardians were excited about unique loot. Particularly the weapons were sought after, and some Guardians still mourn for them, as they are hardly usable today.
However, in the past, crowds of people pushed into it and inspected every corner closely. Now the chamber is empty. Hardly any Guardian wanders into the Vault of Glass at the moment.
Nonetheless, there are still many riddles and mysteries that have long remained unsolved. Guardians are still searching for the hidden 6th chest. A user on reddit has now taken a closer look at the Oracles, or rather the sounds they make when they spawn. And he noticed: somehow it sounds familiar to him.
Bungie and the Music
Before he reveals his findings, he points out that it’s not unusual for Bungie to hide clues in the music and sounds. In Halo 3, there are hidden skulls that can be associated with such a phenomenon.
In short: Players must jump through holographic halo rings in a specific order, which then emit a “hum” at a certain pitch. The order of the tones is remarkable, as they represent part of the Halo 3 melody. In this regard, the user refers to this link.
He just wants to make it clear that Destiny may also have some obscure secrets hidden in the music/sounds. The Halo games from Bungie have numerous music-related Easter eggs. And the user sees a relationship between the sounds of the Oracles and the theme song of Destiny.
What is the theme song of Destiny?
This sounds quite interesting at first. But the question arises immediately: What is the theme music of Destiny?
Here, it is not about a single song, as the user states, but first about a specific sequence of notes. And now it might get a little complicated for those who haven’t studied music.
The user talks about a scale used in Destiny: it consists of the following notes:
C, D, E, F#, G, A, Bb
The user specifically refers to this sequence:
C, Bb, C, Bb, D, C, A
(Now is the moment when a surprised “Ooooh” might go through the ranks of music specialists; for all others, we will present that acoustically shortly).
Where does this sequence of tones appear in the game? The surprising answer of the reddit user: Everywhere! Well, almost everywhere.
The most obvious occurrence of this sequence of tones is in the track “The Great Unknown“. Starting at 0:13, you can push all these seven notes through the sound barrier.
This is the moment when it might become clear to you which tones we are talking about (at least, that’s how it happened for me). In “The Great Unknown,” this sequence of notes is repeated six times, by the way.
This music is everywhere
What’s interesting is: You hear this sequence of tones “every damn time” when you’re chilling in orbit or on your way through the Tower. The user believes that these tones have a nearly hypnotic effect: Every time you enter the Destiny universe, you are welcomed with these 7 tones.
He accuses Bungie of consciously introducing this so that every login feels familiar and pleasant to the Guardian. This is a deliberately introduced constant; and somewhere, we all like to have some consistency in our lives.
And these seven tones, also in this order, appear everywhere in Destiny. For example, also in the track “Excerpt From The Hope”.
This is how The Great Unknown is structured:
Here’s a little treat for all music lovers who know a bit about music. The reddit user consulted a music specialist regarding “The Great Unknown”, specifically about these 7 tones. Here’s the result:
Three voices sing: A soprano and two altos. And this as follows:
- Most of the time we hear the soprano singing the important 7-note sequence:
C, Bb, C, Bb, D, C, A - Simultaneously, one alto sings:
G, G, G, G, G, G, G - And the other alto sings:
E, F#, E, F#, D, E, F#
What is meant by this? Basically, it’s not about a sequence of notes, but about three sets in which the seven tones are played in harmony.
Because we can also play it on the Oracles!
The user admits that it is nothing new to play music on the Oracles. This was indeed done over a year ago. This can be listened to here (highly recommended). It sounds quite threatening and very mysterious.
It definitely sounds a bit like this presented sequence, as the tones are the same. Only the order doesn’t match yet. Back then, the statement was:
Is there a hidden message in these tones? I think no, but I did my best to piece together this “Oracle Hymn”
But now the reddit user wants to establish a connection between the Oracles and the recurring 7-note sequence in Destiny. Unfortunately, he has not yet been able to gather enough people to carry out his plan.
However, he has already made precise plans on how to successfully tackle this. I don’t want to bore you with these very music-technical elaborations here. You can view these on reddit yourself.
The user stated at the end of his remarks that the Vault of Glass was an incredible, epic experience for all of us (and can still be). Many of us remember the high quality and scope of this raid, but many puzzles remain unsolved.
Who knows, maybe there’s much more to discover in the music and sounds of this raid than we all dare to dream. This clever user has definitely already shown a fine ear.
What do you think? Do you believe that there are more secrets hidden in the sounds of the Vault of Glass?
