In the MMO shooter Destiny , all 50 calcified fragments will soon be obtainable. But what can players expect then?
47 calcified fragments are currently available in the game. These are essentially the “bonus stars” that you can earn by paying close attention and taking the extra path. Almost every Destiny player will come into contact with one of these fragments at some point and asks themselves: What are they there for at Xur’s scruffy beard?
You need 45 calcified fragments to get the “Malicious Touch”, a scout rifle that taps into the Guardian’s health beyond the “normal damage”.
But there are supposed to be 50 fragments in total in the game. The last three missing fragments will come in the challenge mode, which will be unlocked in the December patch. This is already known officially.
The question now is: What happens when a player has found all 50 fragments? We would like to speculate on that.
Theory 1: Nothing
The sobering and quite nasty answer is: Nothing will happen at all. The quests were originally only intended for the “Malicious Touch”. It was never intended for anyone to collect all, but only 45 out of 50. It’s fine to overlook 5. Those are buffer fragments.
One thing is clear: Players will be terribly disappointed.
Assessment: Even for Bungie standards, that would be pretty sad. It’s conceivable, but a shitstorm would already be brewing.
Theory 2: A really great Exotic!
Some believe, “there must be more to get!” After all, it was said back then that a weapon was “broken into 50 fragments”. And if there is already the Malicious Touch at 45, there must be something much better at 50! There is an “Ultimate Exotic” waiting for us!
The YouTuber DPJ concluded in a widely noticed video that it must be this “rocket launcher with a microphone” look; the icon was found in the database. No one knows what that is, but at the time, it was the only exotic that was still unknown.
The theory has a catch: it has already been clearly denied. The rocket launcher does not exist; it was a design idea that was discarded.
Assessment: Well, that might be a possibility, but there are few hints that it will come to that. The “Malicious Touch” already covers everything that has been said about “fragments and weapons”. Currently, there is nothing in the database that could be seen in any way as an “ultimate exotic”. But that doesn’t mean anything. It could be a “reinforced form” of the Malicious Touch. Perhaps they increase the damage value and give the weapon an “extra kick”.
However, Bungie has made it clear that they no longer want “ultimate exotics” after Gjallarhorn. Maybe players will get the opportunity to bring a single weapon of their choice up to 330? But that would also raise new problems.
Theory 3: Something not so great, but only a few have it
Theory 3 is “Something to Snack On”: Some cosmetic reward, perhaps a shader, an emblem, or a “cutscene”, maybe a special reward or attention from Bungie.
Assessment: It would probably be a disappointment for many when they realize: The highlight already came at 45. But a special shader, for example, would at least be a consolation prize.
