In Season 9 of Destiny 2, pistols are no longer a secret tip. We show you how a forgotten exotic turns pistols into DPS monsters.
Tired of always playing it safe? Want to take risks and be rewarded for it? We have an interesting build for you Hunter players. With a stacked exotic, you can now get much more out of your pistols.
This is the Hunter exotic we’re talking about: For the build, we rely on the exotic gloves Mechaner’s Trick Sleeves. This armor piece has been in the game since the launch of Destiny 2. It was, however, revamped in the summer of 2018.
The unique ability of this exotic is Flechette Holster. This increases the handling and reload speed of pistols. If you switch to the pistol while severely injured, it deals significantly increased damage.
These pistols we recommend: Since the recommended exotic only supports pistols, we will mention two of the currently strongest legendary sidearms of the Season of Dawn:
- Judgment of the Traveler – This pistol belongs in the secondary slot and deals arc damage. Instead of a single shot, the weapon fires a 3-round burst. Judgment of the Traveler can shine with strong PvE rolls, like Frenzy combined with Surrounded (40% extra damage). You can reliably earn the weapon through the Nessus Obelisk.
- Breaklight – The pistol inspired by Saint-14 is used in the kinetic slot. With this weapon, you have the opportunity to utilize Multikill Clip. This increases your damage by a strong 50%.

Practical Test – Now it gets serious
This is how you play the build: This build is not for reserved Guardians. You must plunge bravely into enemy hordes. Remember that we want to take critical damage. Only then do we benefit from the Mechaner’s Trick Sleeves.
Getting your health bar into the critical range isn’t as big a problem as some players might think. Even in the red zone, your Guardian can still take a hit or two. The offered bonus clearly outweighs the risk.
If the exotic perk Flechette Holster is active, all pistols deal a whopping 100% extra damage. So you double the already considerable damage. Since pistols already do very well against adds without support, you’ll wipe the floor with everything in seconds thanks to the bonuses.
With abilities like Multikill Clip, your pistol reaches 17,000 DPS. Thanks to the Mechaner’s Trick Sleeves, the DPS value jumps to a staggering 34,000. With that, you surpass special weapons like sniper rifles by a good margin. Even smaller bosses don’t stand a chance anymore.
You benefit from this bonus as long as your health bar is in the red zone. There doesn’t seem to be a timer. Note that self-inflicted damage does not count here. So you can throw as many grenades at your feet as you want; the original damage must come from an enemy.
