The Guardians of Destiny 2 are currently discussing whether community manager DeeJ will step down. Why is that?
David Dague, better known as “DeeJ“, has been a community manager at Bungie for years. His role is to mediate between the Guardians and the developers, gather feedback, and pass on all the criticism filtered to the team. Along with other community managers Cozmo and dmg04, he is responsible for “communication”.
In the past, DeeJ also led the livestreams in which the developers presented upcoming content – and always spoke in grandiose terms.
Bungie is looking for a new community manager
Recently, rumors have surfaced that DeeJ might quit his role as community manager. There are several reasons for this:
- A job listing has appeared. Bungie is looking for a new community manager. Many users speculate whether this is to replace DeeJ.
- Because lately, things have been pretty quiet around DeeJ. He is hardly present on reddit anymore, the number of his tweets is also limited, and the “This Week at Bungie” that he was responsible for for years is now taken over by Cozmo or dmg04.
- Additionally, there has been a lot of criticism directed at DeeJ lately. After his statement that friendship is the ultimate loot in Destiny 2, he was personally attacked. “Friendgame instead of Endgame” was mockingly said on social media for weeks. He was also criticized for the livestream in which he promised the most rewarding public event, but there were only two tokens and one blue item.

After the job listing appeared, many users on reddit are sure: DeeJ is packing his things. He doesn’t want or can’t put up with all the salt anymore. Some users conclude that Bungie and Activision have messed up Destiny 2, and DeeJ has to take the blame for it now.
Despite this, DeeJ still enjoys high respect among a large part of the community. He, along with game director Christopher Barrett, is seen as the last beacon in a sea of salt and broken promises, a reddit user once wrote.
Is DeeJ really leaving?
Even though many Guardians would understand if DeeJ were to leave given the current situation surrounding Destiny 2, he is likely to remain at Bungie.
Cozmo stated on reddit: “None of us are leaving.” He is aware that there is a lot of salt right now, but the team is working on improving things. They have no intention of giving up on Destiny 2.
In the meantime, DeeJ himself has also spoken up. He tweets that there are days at Bungie when he has to operate behind the scenes. During this time, Cozmo and dmg04 are in the public eye.
All things considered: DeeJ remains community manager at Bungie, even if he is currently working more in the background. Maybe the job listing can be interpreted as Bungie actually wanting to expand communication with the Guardians in the future…
DeeJ remains, but Eric Hirshberg, who promised us a great Destiny 2, is leaving Activision
