Finally, there is good news regarding the missing catalysts for some popular exotics in Destiny 2. Bungie intends to bring them back in the near future. But not only that. The developer is considering a solution that would allow all exotics to generate super energy soon, even without a catalyst.
Exotics in Destiny 2 are special weapons with unique properties. If they have a catalyst, they become even stronger. However, currently not all available catalysts can be earned, and not all exotics have one.
For this reason, Bungie is considering the return of missing catalysts and will also seek alternative ways. Exotics without a catalyst are expected to generate orbs of power and thus super energy in the near future.
Currently, there are three categories of catalysts in Destiny 2:
- Catalysts that exist and can be earned.
- Catalysts that exist and cannot be earned.
- Exotics that do not yet have a catalyst.
Available catalysts are not earnable: Especially catalysts that cannot be earned are a recurring topic. Players can buy exo-weapons at the tower kiosk, but for some, the existing catalyst remains inaccessible.
This mainly concerns the catalysts from old, no longer accessible exotic quests that have moved into the content vault . For example, the “Whisper” mission for the exotic exo-sniper, “Zero Hour” for the exotic “Perfected Outbreak” or those from seasonal activities. The latter includes “Legal Heir”, the exotic machine gun with a shield.
Bungie intends to change this soon: In the DCP podcast, Chris Proctor, Weapons Feature Lead at Bungie, gave players hope. He announced that these currently unavailable catalysts will be added to the general activities pool with “The Witch Queen” in February 2022, just as it has been done with other catalysts in the past.
The intention of “The Witch Queen” is for all currently inaccessible catalysts to go there.
Catalysts can drop anywhere: This adjustment will make it possible for “All-Purpose Exotics” catalysts to drop in all activities in Destiny 2. For example, in the Crucible, in Nightfall strikes, or in legendary lost sectors.
On one hand, this is good news. On the other hand, this news will also disappoint some players who were hoping for a reunion of the “Whisper” mission in “The Witch Queen”, After the confirmed buff for the Whisper, the exo-sniper, this was quite a plausible option.
However, if the catalyst ends up in the normal activities pool, it will be reworked and a completion of the exotic mission will no longer be necessary. The same would then apply to “Perfected Outbreak”, the exotic pulse rifle with SIVA nanites, and “The Fourth Horseman”, the exotic shotgun.
Destiny 2 aims to make missing catalysts less significant
For the third category, catalysts that do not yet exist, Bungie has a completely new approach in mind. For example, the exotic bow “Le Monarque” was extremely effective against overload champions, which is why many Guardians played it.
However, since it does not have a catalyst, it cannot generate orbs of power. A significant drawback that had to be accepted. Bungie now intends to change this and make missing catalysts less significant.
Here you can find all masterwork catalysts currently available in the game:
Will every Exotic soon be able to generate orbs without a catalyst? In the TWaB (via Bungie.net), Bungie states that they do not like when players express the desire for a catalyst solely to generate orbs and thus super energy. Catalysts should be more than just that.
Bungie explained:
We do not like that the desire for exotic catalysts is largely determined by the orbs of power they generate. That is why we are working on allowing players to circumvent this restriction.
Thus, future catalysts will focus more on the exotic properties that a masterwork upgrade for an exotic weapon offers.
These catalysts could be available soon: Recently, it was revealed that images for the catalysts of the Xenophage, Divinity, and Monte Carlo have been uploaded to the database by Bungie. Even the required number of kills to complete the catalyst is already visible. For the Xenophage, the exotic machine gun, it is for example 400 kills (via light.gg). However, when the catalysts will finally be added to the game is currently unknown.
What do you think about the announcement that perhaps soon no catalysts will be needed for Exotics to generate orbs of power and thus super energy? Is this a sensible change? Which Exotic do you think definitely still needs a catalyst?
