In Destiny 2, Bungie wants to ensure that you no longer have to get frustrated so often in the character menu. Applying shaders or mods should become more reliable.
What is the problem? In the current “This Week at Bungie,” the developers dedicate a large section to a UI issue that has been annoying Guardians for quite some time. The top comment on Reddit regarding the TWaB states that it would be a big deal if Bungie finally gets this fixed.
It is about applying items. There is a bug that repeatedly results in nothing happening when trying to apply a shader or a mod. The bar fills up when you press the button, but the desired action is not executed.
It sometimes happens that applying fails multiple times in a row. And, according to Bungie, you can feel your blood pressure rising with each unsuccessful attempt.
Some time ago, a fix for the issue was applied, but it could not fully resolve it. Therefore, they have once again gone back to work and can now with Shadowkeep on October 1 implement a fix that should squash the bug once and for all.
What’s behind the problem?
This is what Bungie says about it: The unreliable application action is due to overly aggressive security measures. These security measures are intended to ensure that no accidental UI interactions occur.
Previously, an application action was terminated immediately if the cursor moved too far during dismantling. This was particularly annoying on the PC, as slight mouse movements happen quickly. Now, this “Cursors Movement Detection” has been toned down, and applying is only interrupted if the cursor leaves the item.
The second security measure is a bit more complicated. As an example, Bungie mentions: You want to apply a mod. While you hold the button down, a new mod appears in the inventory at the top position, pushing all other mods down by one slot. The cursor is now over a different mod, even though it hasn’t been moved. When such a situation occurs, they want to be absolutely sure that the wrong mod is not applied, as this cannot be undone.
As soon as anything on the character page changes, the application action is canceled. This is problematic because a ton of stats are being collected, and a lot is happening around you that brings changes to the character page. Currently, applying is even interrupted when you are sitting in orbit and receive a clan XP message.
With Shadowkeep, they will revise this security measure. When a change on the character page is detected, it will first check whether the cursor is still over the same item that the application was started on. If the cursor is still over the same item, the action will not be aborted.
What do Guardians say about it? It is a big deal if Bungie can manage this, writes one Guardian and receives hundreds of upvotes. Additionally, it is exciting to read about what is involved in finding and fixing a bug.
And other Guardians are sure that this application bug will certainly return in the future. Whether the fix works is something they will only believe once they no longer have to get frustrated about it.
Hopefully, this annoyance that raises the Guardian pulse will soon be a thing of the past. And Bungie can then tackle the long loading times in the character menu…
