In yesterday’s “This Week at Bungie” blog, Destiny 2 announced a price increase for the season pass, which immediately caused discontent among fans. The increase of 20% is criticized as “an additional charge for practically nothing” and it is said that Bungie does “not deserve a single cent more” after a season filled with bugs.
Destiny 2 has been under criticism since Lightfall: The current DLC Lightfall and the ongoing Season 20 in Destiny 2 not only had a bad start but also faced several persistent bugs afterwards. All of this led to many criticisms from the community.
- The quality of the game is declining and the content hardly offers any diversity or variety.
- The developer is only quickly fixing those bugs that provide an advantage to players. Bugs that disadvantage players, such as invisibility in PvP or the annoying sound bug, are not prioritized enough.
Now, the criticisms have reached a new level, as Bungie announced in its yesterday’s blog post that the price for the Destiny 2 season pass will be increased by 20%.
The decision for this price increase has been disproportionately criticized by many fans as they do not believe that the new Season 21 will offer enough new content to justify such an increase.
This is how much the season pass will cost: Starting with Season 21, the “Season of Depth,” the season pass will be 20% more expensive. At the same time, these changes align with broader price increases for video games across the industry.
- Instead of 1,000 Silver as before, the 3-month pass will cost 1,200 Silver starting with Season 21.
- Anyone purchasing the season pass in the +10 rank bundle will pay 2,200 Silver instead of 2,000.
This means that the new Season 21 will now cost €11.99 instead of the previous €9.99, or in the bundle, instead of €19.99, now €21.99.
This price change only affects players who purchase the season pass separately every 3 months.
- For every player who purchased the Lightfall Standard Edition (which had access to the current live season at the time of purchase) or the Lightfall + Season Pass Edition for Season 20 to 23, nothing changes.
It is also worth mentioning that there is currently no way to acquire these amounts of Silver. In the Silver shop on Steam, only bundles of 500 Silver for €4.99, 1,100 Silver for €9.99, 2,300 Silver for €19.99, 3,500 Silver for €29.99, and 6,000 Silver for €49.99 can be purchased.
There is currently no suitable Silver offer for the new Season 21 unless Bungie changes something here.
This is why the pass is getting more expensive: Bungie justified the decision to raise prices by stating that they want to continue investing in the development of engaging seasonal experiences for the DLC year of Lightfall. Additionally, they will be “evaluating new approaches for post-launch content in the year of the DLC ‘The Final Shape.'”
“Damn, doesn’t Destiny 2 already have enough money?”
Despite the prospect of more seasonal experiences, many fans are disappointed that the season pass, which was already considered expensive, is now getting even more costly. Their frustration and disappointment about this adjustment have been expressed accordingly on Reddit.
One player, SenpaiSwanky, finds the following words regarding the price increase:
No word about the […] audio quality, the quality of the game, which literally declines every week, and if the last seasonal story was anything, I can’t imagine a single reason why this should cost more money. I don’t know how other Destiny players feel, but I’m about to change my entire perspective on this game.
I’m waiting a month for a season before I decide whether to buy it. […] The quality of the game has since changed drastically in every conceivable way. […] The amount of problems lurking beneath the surface of this game and the price/quality of the last DLC and the season is absolutely [bad].

Overall, the criticism of the price increase of the Destiny 2 season pass shows that players are still willing to pay for high-quality content. However, if these new content does not meet expectations, it could also lead to a decline in player numbers.
It is currently unclear how the price increase of the season pass will affect Destiny 2. However, Guardians have made it very clear that they want more and, above all, better content without annoying bugs for their money.
