At Destiny 2, there is important information about the release of Shadowkeep. The game will be offline for 24 hours – during this time, you can start the preload on PS4 and Xbox One. The Steam preload is already running.
When is Destiny 2 down for so long? Bungie is currently making the final preparations for the launch of Shadowkeep. A few hours after yesterday the launch trailer was released, Bungie provided important information about a long server downtime and the preload on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
The developers share the following:
- On Monday, September 30, Destiny 2 and Destiny 1 will be taken offline in preparation for Shadowkeep.
- This maintenance is expected to last 24 hours. Once it ends, Shadowkeep will launch on October 1.
Bungie is not currently providing exact times. With Forsaken, it started on Tuesdays at 7 PM – at the Weekly Reset time. Presumably, the Shadowkeep launch will also occur around 7 PM.
So, Destiny 2 would be offline from Monday 7 PM to Tuesday 7 PM.
This week, during the night from Thursday to Friday, the final launch details should be announced. Then we will probably learn specific times. We will report on this.
Why is Destiny 2 offline for so long? This is likely related to the Steam migration. During this maintenance, your PC Guardians will be transferred with all their gear from Battle.net to Steam. Remember to link your accounts beforehand – otherwise, you will lose all progress on PC.

When does the preload for Shadowkeep start?
The preload for PS4 and Xbox One: Bungie confirmed via Twitter that Guardians on PS4 and Xbox One can start the preload during the above maintenance.
In other words: 24 hours before the Shadowkeep launch, the preload starts.
How big will the download be? We discuss the expected download size of Shadowkeep here. It has been reported to be around 165 GB, but the download sizes on Steam are currently significantly smaller, around 80 GB, because:
The Steam preload has started: Last night, Bungie happily tweeted: Destiny 2 is now available for preload on Steam – including Shadowkeep.

Community Manager Cozmo points out that you need to make a fresh download via Steam. You cannot use the game data obtained through Battle.net for Steam. This preload will not affect the current installation; you just need to choose a different storage space and not overwrite anything:
How you will spend the 24 hours during which you can’t play Destiny, you now have to figure out for yourself. We recommend reading all articles about Shadowkeep and Season 8 that we have published on MeinMMO in the past weeks and months.
