Destiny 2 Forsaken will feature a huge raid. Are we fighting a dragon in it – an Ahamkara?
When Bungie drums up excitement for upcoming expansions, they often release more information in advance than many guardians would like. For example, entire story missions, strikes, or exotics are revealed weeks before the actual release, leading some players to shake their heads, thinking they would rather discover this themselves in-game.
Raids as Great Secrets: However, the developers always keep one aspect of Destiny under wraps in their promotional frenzy: the raids. These remain a secret until the respective raid launch. Players should not know the bosses, mechanics, or puzzles beforehand.
Note: Spoilers ahead!
What official information is there about the Forsaken raid?
With the Forsaken raid, Bungie is handling it similarly. The extensive group PvE activity should remain mysterious until release. Information about it is scarce.
However, a few tidbits of information are already known:
- The new raid is supposed to fit thematically with the story of Forsaken – it is not a completely disconnected area in Destiny 2
- The raid is expected to include more boss fights than any previous Destiny experience, meaning it should have at least five bosses (the Oryx raid had four with the Warpriest, Golgoroth, the Witches, and Oryx)
- The raid is set deep in the heart of the Dreaming City, the endgame zone of Forsaken
- The developers describe the raid as a mix of the Dreadnaught and the Glass Vault from Destiny 1
- There will be plenty of puzzles and hidden areas
- The raid is supposed to be “huge”
- And: In the heart of the Dreaming City, that is in the raid, a “huge creature” awaits you
More leaks and rumors about the Forsaken raid: Recently a possible leak for Forsaken appeared, some of which confirmed a few details while other information was refuted. This leak had some concrete details about the raid, but should be taken with skepticism:
- The raid is said to be called “Last Wish” and to have both a normal mode and a prestige mode
- The raid boss is named “Dul Incaru, the Eternal Return” – although the leaker is not 100% sure of this
- There is supposed to be a one-time challenge where players must complete the raid within 24 hours of its release
Additionally, Joe Blackburn, the Destiny raid team lead, tweeted a few weeks ago that “she’s too beautiful” to get a tattoo of the new raid boss on his rear. In short: There will be a female raid boss.
What do all these pieces of information have to do with a dragon as a raid boss?
Is a dragon waiting for the guardians? Putting all these pieces of information and leaks together, it could indeed be that a giant dragon is slumbering in the new raid. More precisely, an Ahamkara, a powerful and mysterious creature that is said to be dragon-like. Allegedly, all Ahamkara were wiped out during the great hunt. However, rumors have persisted that there may be a few surviving Ahamkara.
Why should an Ahamkara be in the raid? The first rumors of an Ahamkara in the raid originated from an article by Game Informer. In exclusive coverage, the site wrote that the dreaming city is comparable to a homeland of elves from a fantasy novel, which is threatened by a treacherous dragon, which has infected the heart of the land.
When mentioning “dragon,” many guardians immediately thought of the Ahamkara, whose appearance in the game they have been waiting for years. However, critics of the theory emphasized that Game Informer was merely making a comparison. Just as there will be no elves in Forsaken, there will be no dragons, so the statement goes.
But the Ahamkara theory is becoming clearer
Later, the aforementioned information about the raid surfaced, which now supports the Ahamkara theory:
- A huge creature in the raid? Could be an Ahamkara!
- The raid is set deep in the heart of the Dreaming City? According to Game Informer, the dragon has infected the heart of the land
- A raid boss is female? Ahamkara can also be female and beautiful
- The raid is called “Last Wish”? This raid name fits perfectly with the Ahamkara, as these dragons are said to have the ability to grant wishes. Once, guardians seeking knowledge and power sought out the Ahamkara for this reason
Additionally, this Warlock set was shown in a Forsaken trailer, which could also hint at an Ahamkara in Forsaken:
According to some guardians, the eye area of the helmet resembles the eyes of this Ahamkara seen in an official concept art:
It is a fact that many guardians wish for an Ahamkara in Destiny 2 and consider every little hint as proof that such a dragon will soon make its grand appearance. However, there are currently no official details on this.
Nevertheless, the current hints fit surprisingly well with the Ahamkara theory – and it would be a real shame if we don’t get to see such a being in Destiny 2 soon.
