Destiny 2 is coming. Compared to Destiny 1, there will be some innovations in PvE. Find out here in the overview what PvE content awaits the Guardians.
Bungie promises over 80 different PvE activities at the launch of Destiny 2 . The specific activities included in this number are not known, but 80 is definitely a lot.
Destiny 1 offers a total of 97 PvE activities – including all expansions! This number was calculated by a Reddit user, who summed up all PvE activities from story missions to patrols. At launch in September 2014, Destiny only offered 29 activities for PvE enthusiasts.
But enough about Destiny 1! What PvE content will there be in Destiny 2? The following PvE content is already known.
The Destiny 2 Campaign – Action-Packed Story Missions
Humanity is in danger. Ghaul attacks the Tower and the Last City with his Cabal Legion. His goal: to wipe out the Guardians and humanity and seize the Traveler’s power. To do this, the Cabal imprison the Traveler in a type of cage, separating the Guardians from the light of the Traveler – and thus from the source of their power.
In Destiny 1, the Guardians could always rely on the light: it granted them “superpowers” and they could always be revived with the help of the light. This power is taken from the Guardians in Destiny 2 with the capture of the Traveler. The Guardians are left to fend for themselves.
The campaign in Destiny 2 will consist of multiple story missions focused on the war against the Cabal Legion. The Guardians must regain their strength, reclaim their powers, and stand up to Ghaul.
Unlike Destiny 1, where the story was told in a disjointed and confusing manner, Bungie aims to deliver a “great” story with Destiny 2. There will be tons of cinematics, adding action and vibrancy to the narrative.
The story mission “Homecoming” was already playable in the Destiny 2 beta – and it can keep this promise: the gameplay alternates with action-packed cutscenes. If all missions can maintain this level, there is a cool campaign to look forward to.
Story missions can be played solo or in a fireteam with up to three members.
Throughout the campaign, you will enter different “worlds.” You start in the European Dead Zone – a vast map that also contains the new social space, the Farm. On your Guardian journey, you will also visit the planetoid Nessus, Jupiter’s moon Io, and Saturn’s moon Titan – all the info about the worlds in Destiny 2 can be found here.
In these worlds, there is even more to discover than just story missions. These additional PvE contents are known!
The Strikes
Strikes in Destiny are self-contained instances meant to be overcome in a fireteam of 3 players. These strikes can usually be completed in about 20 minutes and consist of multiple waves of enemies and a big final boss. Smaller mechanics, such as special switches that need to be activated or changing combat arenas with specific attributes, come into play.
In addition to the normal strikes, the so-called Nightfall Strike will be making a return. This will have a significantly higher difficulty level with specific modifications and particularly valuable rewards. It is still unknown how the modifiers will differ from the predecessor. However, Bungie has already confirmed that there will be time limits.
The strike “The Inverted Spire” is already known. It was playable during the beta.
The Raid as the toughest PvE content
Of course, a raid cannot be missing in Destiny 2. However, it will not be playable directly at launch; it will be activated shortly thereafter.
Raids are among the toughest endgame activities. They are tackled in a fireteam of up to six players and represent the hardest PvE activities in the Destiny universe.
In addition to all kinds of enemies, you can also expect jumping sections in a Destiny raid. Plus, there will be big bosses with intricate mechanics that will test your teamwork.
Nothing is known about the exact content of the raid in Destiny 2 yet, but it is presumed to be against the main villain Ghaul and thus against the Cabal. The Cabal are the only race that did not receive a raid in Destiny 1.
In Destiny 2, there will be changes to the previously known raid system. We do not yet know what these will look like, but the game director of Destiny 2, Luke Smith, has already announced that there will be a new penalty for dying.
The Open World Activities
Destiny 1 offered a patrol mode for every location, where smaller tasks for the different factions of the game could be completed. They also served to collect materials for upgrading equipment. Such patrols will likely also be present in Destiny 2.
Moreover, these activities in the open world of Destiny 2 are known:
- The public events are back in play. In these, you must defeat a boss or fend off waves of enemies within a set time. Other players can join at any time. However, these events are said to be more varied in Destiny 2 than in Destiny 1. Additionally, you can now directly see on the overview map when and where a public event starts. Possible rewards will also be displayed.
- Completely new are the so-called Lost Sectors, standalone dungeons where you can supposedly kill a powerful enemy, steal his treasure key, and loot the loot. These will not be displayed on the map. You must look out for special signs in the world that indicate a nearby Lost Sector:
- Flashpoints are weekly activities in the open world that anyone can participate in. They are supposed to offer rewards at Nightfall Strike level. In a Flashpoint, you can eliminate secret bosses that are tied to events. Moreover, Cayde-6 has treasure maps for you. The treasures can be found in the area where the Flashpoint is.
- Adventures are supposed to give you a closer look at the world and the characters of Destiny 2 in short missions (there are no loading screens). Here, rewards will also be displayed directly on the overview map. After the campaign, you can complete additional quests in the world.
Additionally, you can search for chests and hunt high-ranking targets in the open world.
