The Faction Rally has started in Destiny 2 and three factions want to win you over for their cause. Which one should you choose?
In Destiny 2, you face a decision this week: Will you join the New Monarchy, the Future War Cult, or the Dead Orbit?
Since November 7th, a group battle has been running, and if you have completed the campaign and reached character level 20, you may now join the fight for a faction of your choice.
Many console Guardians will already be familiar with these factions. On one hand, the same factions were already in Destiny 1; on the other hand, a Faction Rally took place at the end of September.
However, many PC players are now encountering the faction leaders of the New Monarchy, the Future War Cult, and the Dead Orbit for the first time. Who should one choose?
These are the three factions in Destiny 2 – Which one will you choose?
Each faction represents a different ideology. These can be summarized briefly as follows:
- New Monarchy: The leader is Executor Hideo. This faction wants you to focus on the Last City. The Last City is believed to give meaning to every victory. The New Monarchy wants to give the Last City the leadership it deserves and bring back the Golden Age.
- Dead Orbit: The leader is Arach Jalaal. This faction sees the system as lost. They want to create a new life for everyone in distant worlds. Their goal is to leave Earth and “grow new blooms far from this dead world.”
- The Future War Cult: The leader is Lakshmi-2. This faction views war as the only solution. No walls can keep war away, no councils can prevent it. Therefore, one must accept war as the future and prepare for it.
If you cannot identify with any of these worldviews, you are welcome to choose the faction that you think brings the coolest loot:
- The Future War Cult was known for its strong weapons in Destiny 1. They have colorful shaders – which are eye-catching but not to everyone’s taste.
- The New Monarchy had and still has stylish armor pieces and shaders that turn your gear red.
- Dead Orbit: This faction has always been very popular due to their black shaders. Followers of the Dead Orbit are often referred to as “Space Goths.”
Many Guardians therefore decide on the faction whose “style” they like best.
Hence, being advised against Dead Orbit
In recent days, several posts around the Faction Rally have appeared in the Destiny forums: There is always advice against supporting Dead Orbit. “You can choose whoever you want – just not Dead Orbit!” Even the finder of the crazy token farming method that recently emerged wants the method to be used responsibly – and by that he means it should be used against Dead Orbit.
Why is that? Dead Orbit still has those cool shaders!
The reason lies in the winning weapon: The faction whose guardians open the most reward packages after a week wins the group battle. This winning faction then offers a special weapon – the other two winning weapons remain under wraps.
And Dead Orbit has this time a Grenade Launcher as the winning weapon – which is a miserable weapon class. The Fusion Rifle from the Future War Cult and the sword from the New Monarchy are also not top weapons, but nobody wants a Grenade Launcher.
The US site Kotaku writes that Grenade Launchers are so bad in Destiny 2 that it feels like a test. As if Bungie wants to test you: “Okay, so you like Dead Orbit, but do you like it enough to support it when it only has this miserable weapon for you?”
After all, the first Faction Rally was won by Dead Orbit – and according to several surveys by a wide margin. Black shaders are just too tempting.
A survey about our second Faction Rally revealed that the New Monarchy will take the lead this time. Swords are just cooler than grenade launchers…
Can you switch factions? – Info on the group battle
The currently ongoing group battle runs from November 7th to November 14th.
During this event, you must commit to one faction per character. Once the faction is chosen, it cannot be changed.
Only when the third Faction Rally starts, which will likely be somewhere in December, will you have free choice of faction again. Each of your three characters can belong to a different faction.

- The winning weapon will be available for purchase from November 14th at 10 AM until the next weekly reset. It costs 1000 Glimmer for faction members of the winning faction and 50,000 Glimmer for everyone else.
- During this “winner week,” in which the weapon can be purchased, faction tokens can still be exchanged for reward packages.
- During an event, only 30 faction reward packages can be earned, which may drop faction-specific weapons and armor pieces. All other faction reward packages will grant shaders only.
- You should redeem all your faction tokens before the end of the winner week. Because until the next Faction Rally, the tokens from the previous rally will be removed from your inventory.
