Destiny 2 was advertised as the flagship title for Google Stadia’s cloud gaming service. However, currently, (still) not many guardians are active on Stadia. The unofficial player numbers are disappointing for this major launch title.
What is the story behind Google Stadia and Destiny 2? Thanks to Google Stadia, you no longer need to download games. You also do not need a powerful gaming PC or a current console. You can stream the titles from laptops, smartphones, and televisions directly via Google servers: No more waiting for downloads and patches.
Destiny 2 was intended to be the launch title for Google Stadia. Bungie and Google have entered into a deep cooperation for this purpose. With buttery smooth 60 FPS and a resolution of up to 4K, Destiny 2 should also impress players on older devices or mobile – provided a good internet connection.
Destiny 2 holds a special place on Google Stadia: It was the title that premium customers received “for free” when they subscribed. Almost all other games need to be purchased separately by Google Stadia customers – it is not a “subscription service like Netflix.”
Plan for long waiting times
Here are the player numbers on Google Stadia: Stadia has officially launched, and we guardians can save the universe on another platform. However, the player numbers on Google’s streaming devices currently look rather modest.
Only 0.7% of all “Destiny 2” players are active on Google Stadia. On November 20, fewer than 10,000 players logged in throughout the entire day. In contrast, over 1.3 million users were active on the other platforms. Almost half of them on Steam.
Valves platform recorded 550,000 users and has become the largest hub for Destiny 2 since the Shadowkeep launch.
Where do the numbers come from? The Stadia numbers come from Charlemagne. This is a tool that can display not only daily player numbers but also the distribution of guardians across individual activities. The numbers may not be 100% accurate but do show a clear trend.
Especially low is the Stadia population in these areas of Destiny 2:
- In PvP, only 44 players were active throughout the day.
- Only 13 players tried Gambit.
- A total of 52 guardians “gathered” in the raids.
The majority of players are still engaged in the story and PvE.
What could be the reasons for this? Google Stadia is still a very young way to experience Destiny 2. The streaming service is still in its infancy and has some startup issues.
Additionally, Stadia cannot yet be played by everyone interested. Currently, a large portion of pre-order customers have no access to the new platform.
Many guardians view the situation somewhat cautiously from a distance. Even here on Mein-MMO, you want to wait and see how the situation around Destiny 2 and Stadia develops.
I canceled my pre-order today and will wait and see and check out the first reviews… Even with a good LAN connection, “Destiny servers contacted” happens extraordinarily often. I don’t want to know how it runs with a streamed game over Wi-Fi.

Currently, concerns about the internet connection seem to be the thorn in the shoe. The renowned gaming journalist Jason Schreier has his own problems with Destiny 2 on Stadia.
While he is impressed by the fast loading times and the fact that the concept of cloud gaming works. However, the connection quality and the stuttering are noticeable issues. Schreier also mentions that he was unable to participate in a Crucible match. Simply not enough players could be found.
