Bungie explains how the seasons in Destiny 2 will work. In Season 2, there will be a winter event, different weapons, adjustments, and much more!
Most of you probably already know: We are currently in “Season 1”. You can see this by going to your clan profile on the Bungie website. Above your clan level, it says “Season 1”.
But what are these seasons in Destiny 2 about? Bungie provided answers to this question during TwitchCon.
Winter Event with Ice Hockey in Season 2
Community Manager DeeJ spoke along with two developers from the live team about the seasons. The live team at Bungie is responsible for time-limited events such as the Iron Banner or the Faction Rally. Their job is to keep players engaged and motivated, providing them with new goals and challenges. This is exactly what the seasons aim to achieve.
In the first year of Destiny 2, there will be four seasons. Each season is supposed to bring significant changes to Destiny 2. We are currently in Season 1. There is no specific start date for Season 2 yet. However, there will be at least one Iron Banner and one Faction Rally in Season 1 before that.
The highlight of Season 2 will be the winter event: “The Dawning”, in German “Der Anbruch”. This already took place in Destiny 1 at the end of 2016 and brought new exotics, the SRL, a book of triumphs, and strike scoring.
What The Dawning will bring to Destiny 2 is not yet fully known. Bungie only reveals that you will be allowed to play ice hockey and throw snowballs at each other: The ice hockey will likely be similar to the mini-soccer game in the Farm. You kick a puck back and forth and try to get it into the opposing goal.
The snowballs are supposed to be throwable in the open worlds – and if you hit an opponent with one, they will take damage.
Additionally, during “The Dawning” there will be new cosmetic items as well as a special armor set.
There has been no mention if the SRL, the Sparrow Racing, will return. More information about this winter event will follow in the future.
Numerous Innovations in Season 2
Destiny 2 is currently struggling to maintain long-term motivation. Many guardians complain that they have nothing to do in the endgame. Season 2 is intended to create new incentives for guardians to have something to do again.
The clan progress will be reset. In Season 2, everyone will start at zero again. The perks on your clan banner change from season to season. They always have a specific theme. In Season 1, the theme is “Cabal”.
There will be major changes to weapon balance with each new season. The seasons can be seen as milestones where tweaks can be made and new content can be deployed. However, smaller balance adjustments can also be made during a season if necessary.
Not only weapon balance, but also the weapons themselves change from season to season. Apparently the kinetic and energy archetypes will be shuffled, and weapons will receive different perks. Thus, the pool of playable weapons will grow from season to season. An example from Bungie: The Iron Banner hand cannon is currently a kinetic weapon. In Season 2 it could return as an energy weapon with different perks.
In Season 2, ornaments for items from the Trials, Iron Banner, and Faction Rally will be introduced. These ornaments can be unlocked by mastering certain smaller challenges.
The Iron Banner will be adjusted in Season 2. You will then be able to buy weapons directly from Lord Saladin. The Trials of the Nine will be visually revised.
The contents of the Bright Engrams will be updated. In Season 2, you will find new emotes, new ships, new sparrows, and much more. These cosmetic items are season-specific. A cool ship that you get in Season 2 will not be available in Season 3 anymore. An exception are the shaders: these can always be obtained. New shaders are added each season, but none are removed.
There will be “Clarion Calls”. These are time-limited global events that grant XP bonuses when you complete certain tasks. Some of these events require a clan membership, but not all.
In Season 2, at least one new Crucible map will come. Something will trigger its release – similar to the Trials, the Raid, or the Iron Banner.
By the way: There was no information about ranked games, private matches, or new weapon mods.
More details will be available at the Paris Games Week. This will take place at the beginning of November.
