The competitive multiplayer of Destiny 2 is undergoing significant changes compared to its predecessor. Players are speculating that Bungie wants to take the PvP of Destiny towards eSports. But is that true?
The maps in Destiny 2 are getting smaller, the maximum player count has been reduced from 12 to 8, and non-shooter abilities (super attacks) recharge slower. It seems Bungie is doing everything to make Destiny 2 fit for eSports tournaments.
A popular criticism from many players is that Bungie is only focusing on balancing for the multiplayer in Destiny 2 while the PvE mode is left behind. What does Bungie itself say about this accusation?

The site dailystar was able to interview Lars Bakken, the design lead for the Crucible, on this topic:
Bungie has a long tradition in competitive multiplayer and a lot of experience from previous games like Halo.
I think the topic of eSports is very interesting. Ultimately, we look at where players like to spend their time in the game. And if they want an environment suitable for hosting multiplayer tournaments, we’ll take a close look at that and are interested in it as well.
Yes, we wanted Destiny 2 to be more comfortable fitting into the eSports world. But not from the very start. We don’t want to hold world championships right away.
Lars Bakken also emphasizes that Bungie will definitely support the topic of eSports if the players wish for it.
How soon could tournaments be held in Destiny 2?
That will definitely take some time. Bungie will primarily promote the PvE aspects of the game at the launch of Destiny and highlight the improvements coming with the successor to Destiny 1.
Sooner or later, however, Bungie will have to address the topic. The most important prerequisite for this: Private / Custom Games. Without this game mode, no tournaments can be held.
Bungie has already confirmed that private matches will not be available at launch. Private matches breathed new life into Destiny 1 and opened the door wide for eSports.
