The Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris are finally getting the long-awaited Freelance mode exclusively for solo players tonight, October 22. The mode is returning as part of the Trials Labs. If you want to play Freelance, it will be available only this weekend.
The community has long been demanding a complete Freelance mode for the Trials of Osiris, where only solo players can participate. Bungie had already made it easier for solo players to play the Trials of Osiris four weeks ago. But that wasn’t enough. Although the player search was disabled, meaning you didn’t need a fixed team anymore, solo players still often faced teams.
With Freelance Lab, that is no longer the case:
- Freelance is specifically designed for solo players (3v3).
- No pre-made fireteams are allowed to join. You will no longer face teams among the opponents.
- The mode has its own point that will be displayed to you on the right side of the normal Trials playlist via the Crucible Navigator.
- Of course, solo players can still use the normal playlist if they wish.
That’s why the mode was long overdue: Until this season, the Trials of Osiris were only accessible if you had a full team of three players. When Bungie finally opened the door for solo players, many more players flocked to the Trials, which benefited the mode. So many players had never visited the Trials before.
The problem was that solo players had to almost always compete against teams of three. Teams benefit from better communication, coordination, and implementation of strategy. No wonder the Trials were a frustrating experience for solo players.
Trials teams manipulated the playlist to their advantage
As if that weren’t frustrating enough for solo players, fixed Trials teams also tried to intentionally match up with solo players. This gave them exactly the advantage they needed in the past week to reach the Lighthouse faster and become Flawless.
How was this possible?: We don’t want to disclose exactly how this little cheating worked in detail. Bungie has already fixed the method with the Hotfix 3.3.1.1. It is no longer possible for fireteam leaders to start the Trials if they haven’t reached the required power level.
This is the players’ demand: Although Freelance in the Trials of Osiris in Destiny 2 is not yet available, players are already wishing for this mode to be permanent. Reddit is filled with various posts where players express the same sentiment: Forever Freelance for the Trials.
For example, BeSeaBass writes on reddit:
Trials need a permanent solo playlist, 3-player teams are completely unbalanced and nearly unbeatable. The solo playlist is a fair way to give regular players access to trial loot (except the lighthouse, which is fine). More hardcore players can play in their own challenging 3v3 stack league.
Will Bungie respond to the demand? Bungie will likely depend on how well the mode is ultimately used by players. After all, it is returning only as part of the “Trials Labs”, Bungie’s testing environment for various game modes and changes. For example, four weeks ago, you could also test the Elimination mode as lab rats.
This weekend you will be rewarded
That’s why the Trials are particularly worthwhile right now: Solo players can not only complete their Trials matches in peace this weekend, but also earn double reputation. This makes it easier to obtain the Trials weapons and armor. Or you can farm a good roll of Reed’s Regret or the Trials weapon for Flawless this week “Sola’s Bane” this weekend as a master variant.

Your rewards will be increased even more if you have a full card. Even if you’ve lost one or two matches. So don’t reset the pass repeatedly. Additionally, Bungie has stated that armor drops now have a higher chance of better stats.
How long will the mode be available?: The Trials of Osiris Freelance will only be available this weekend for the time being. It starts today, October 22, at 7 PM with the Daily Reset. And the Trials will end again at the Weekly Reset next Tuesday, October 26.
Will you be tackling the Trials solo this weekend? Or do you think it is a mode that can’t be played well without communication? What are your thoughts on the manipulation of the Trials playlist?
