No one has been able to find the Black Spindle in Destiny 2. However, many fans are working hand in hand to finally locate the exotic sniper rifle – albeit so far without success. For many, this search is one of the peculiarities that define Destiny.

For numerous fans, the Destiny experience embodies much more than just shooting aliens in the face while casually chatting with friends. The current hunt for the yet unobtainable sniper rifle Black Spindle illustrates well what makes Destiny truly special for many.
The Joint Hunt for Secrets – The Special Thing About Destiny
Hints of the Black Spindle found: When the Warmind expansion for Destiny 2 was released, some surprises were discovered in the game data. Very early on, data mining stumbled upon entries for the exotic masterpiece catalyst of the Black Spindle – a popular exotic sniper rifle from Destiny 1.
Some time later, entries for the unique perk White Nail, which only exists with the Black Spindle, were also found. However, despite these clear hints that the Spindle is hidden somewhere in Destiny 2, it seems to still be impossible to obtain this exotic sniper rifle.
The hunt has not yet borne fruit: Even the most passionate secret hunters in the sub-reddit “Raid Secrets” have not been able to discover the Black Spindle in the game:
- On one hand, it currently looks like the Spindle is hidden behind a time lock – similar to how it was the case with the Polaris Lance.
- On the other hand, some believe that the community has simply overlooked something.
Fans Love the “Mystery” Part of Destiny
But that’s exactly what makes Destiny special for many: New plausible theories are presented daily and discussed in detail – this defines the community and keeps it alive. And that’s what makes Destiny, Destiny for many. It’s the new excitement each time you get a little closer to a large common goal, a mystery.
Everything starts small: The Raid Secrets sub-reddit and the general hunt for treasures and secrets are not really new phenomena and have existed since the heyday of Destiny. Fans and players from around the world came together in Destiny 1 to hunt for new items, discover surprises, and solve puzzles.

Generally, everything starts in a very manageable framework, with a small group of Guardians trying to solve a puzzle, for example. But once the first detail is discovered, the whole thing quickly grows, and hundreds or even thousands of Guardians come together and try to contribute to solving the puzzle using various methods, theories, and strategies – in-game, on Reddit, on YouTube, and other platforms.
The Myth of the Black Spindle: The original Black Spindle was a remake of the legendary sniper Black Spindle from the Crota raid. You could only access it by taking an alternative route within a specific heroic story mission in Destiny and then mastering a challenging segment within the given time. This was a tough challenge – even for well-coordinated teams – and also one of the most thrilling secrets of the Destiny series.
Secrets are not always what players hope for. What initially appears to be a cool new exotic might also be a basketball court placed by Bungie or turn out to be a life-sized hidden Valkyrie spear in the state of New York. But all these things – whether exciting or not – were only found because the community moved mountains in a joint effort to discover something new, something unique.
With the Black Spindle in Destiny 2, it’s no different. Every oddly shaped rock, every bug, every locked door is seen by someone as a possible way to the Spindle and is often supported by solid theories. Yet, as wrong as the community has been with its theories and assumptions over the past two months, it has been fun to watch and participate in the passionate secret hunters and their attempts to uncover the Spindle mystery.

Such things are memorable: Unique weapons and loot are what bring fans back to Destiny over and over again, and what Destiny 2 desperately needs more of. However, the unique way in which an entire community forms and evolves around a common big goal – such as trying to find a weapon that apparently isn’t even in the game – is something that will truly be remembered. Even after the last players have found everything exciting there is to discover.
If you want to actively participate: The Black Spindle is still out there, and many Guardians will not give up hope until they find it. If you want to actively participate in the large-scale hunt for secrets, check out Raid Secrets. Reinforcements are always welcome there.
By the way: With the new location Dreaming City, more secrets, riddles, and puzzles are finally set to arrive in Destiny 2. More on that: New info on the Dreaming City – Here’s what is known so far
