What’s coming soon in Destiny 2: On February 9, Season 12 will end with the Weekly Reset in Destiny 2, and the new Season 13, the Season of the Chosen, will begin. The Destiny 2 story will continue after the events of “Beyond Light” and the Season of the Hunt.
And while the pyramid ships of Darkness and Xivu Arath, God of War and younger sister of the Witch Queen Savathûn and Oryx, continue to destabilize our solar system, a new enemy enters the stage.
Suddenly, we have to face a Cabal Empress and her forces. Many Guardians might now wonder: Who is this new main enemy of Season 13? Because only well-read lore enthusiasts or very attentive buyers of the Collector’s Edition of Destiny 2 may have heard of this Cabal lady.
Who is Caiatl? The antagonist of Season 13 in detail
We provide you with a compact overview so you don’t have to flip through the entire lore of Destiny 2.
Who exactly is Caiatl? Even if it may not be immediately recognizable in the trailer: The massive, stocky negotiator of the Cabal in the Season 13 trailer is actually a lady. This is noticeable by the large tusks that only female Cabal have. Furthermore, the female representatives of this species are larger than the males.
The good lady goes by the name Caiatl and is the daughter of the Cabal Emperor Calus himself. Although he is no longer in the game, many a Guardian may know him from the Leviathan raid. According to lore, Caiatl held (or better said, held) the rank of a princess and is a great space pilot. She did not share her father’s love for luxury and preferred a life shaped more by the military.
Caiatl’s story up to Season 13: Although Calus loved his daughter and always wanted the best for her, Caiatl fell into disgrace with her father due to an incident. Since then, the emperor wants to see her dead. But what exactly happened?
Well, the incident is about a coup against Calus, the effects of which could be felt even in the former main story of Destiny 2, i.e., the Vanilla story. Calus was once a powerful and benevolent emperor who cared deeply about the welfare of his subjects. He cleansed his empire of the scum of crooks and bandits.
But a group of subordinates and close associates betrayed him and took control of large parts of the Cabal army. Calus was subsequently banished and lived in exile. Ghaul, the main enemy from the original Vanilla campaign of Destiny 2, then took his position.
But what does Caiatl have to do with all this? She was part of the group that led the coup against her father and ultimately overthrew the emperor. She was heavily involved in the betrayal and destroyed a device with which Calus could have called for help to avert the coup.
However, since the rise (and fall) of Dominus Ghaul, whom we defeated in the main campaign of the base game of Destiny 2, little has been known about Caiatl’s whereabouts. She became the empress after Ghaul and the new head of the Cabal Empire. Since then, she has tried to rally the remnants of the defeated Red Legion around her.
This is Caiatl in the new season: After our solar system was visited by the Darkness and her ships due to recent events, Caiatl sought to persuade people to form an alliance with the Cabal. Because they, too, are apparently fighting against the Hive and the Darkness.
However, as seen in the trailer for Season 13, these negotiations for an alliance apparently fail, and the Guardians are now richer by another powerful enemy.
