With the Shadowkeep expansion coming this fall, Finishing Moves are being introduced to Destiny 2. But what exactly this new feature entails and how it works has not yet been known. However, Bungie has clarified this and explained the finishers in more detail.
What are Finishing Moves? During the presentation of the upcoming major fall expansion Shadowkeep, Bungie revealed Finishing Moves as one of the new features.
Some short clips were shown, featuring the various Guardian classes performing some cool new animations to spectacularly take out a few enemies, even sending a hefty ogre flying through the air. However, no further explanations or details were provided – at least not until now.
Where is the information coming from? In an exclusive interview with Polygon, Destiny Franchise Director Luke Smith and Destiny General Manager Mark Noseworthy spoke more about this new feature and revealed various new details about the finishers.
This is what we now know about the finishers:
- Finishing Moves or Finishers are new attack options for the Guardians. Bungie describes them as a type of “combat emote”. They vary in appearance and execution depending on the Guardian class.
- These attacks cost Super energy (not the full amount) and can only be executed at certain moments.
- Once an enemy’s health drops below a certain threshold, it will be indicated that a finisher can be activated.
- You are vulnerable during the finisher animations and can take damage.
- Finishers are meant to be more than just a visually stylish way to send enemies to the virtual afterlife. They will also have a functional purpose. Special mods can be applied to armor pieces, allowing these new moves to have various effects. So far, the only example given has been generating extra ammunition for your team.
- At launch, you will only be able to equip one finisher, but Bungie is working on the ability to choose from multiple options. A random option will also be introduced, where you won’t know which finisher will be executed next by your guardian.
- The finisher system is twofold: There is the style, meaning the visual component, which is separate from the functional component that affects gameplay. Both components can be customized independently of each other. The gameplay component will not be influenced by a different look of the animation.
- The cosmetic component can be earned similar to emotes: through the Eververse or as rare unlocking through challenging in-game challenges. The mods with the in-game bonuses, meaning the functional component, can only be earned through gameplay.
Bungie, however, reminds us that this feature is still in development and that some aspects may change before the release of Shadowkeep on October 1st.
