In Destiny 2, you should definitely perform an Exotic in PvP that everyone thought was brokenly nerfed. But if you play with a controller, you have one of the strongest weapons for the Crucible at your disposal, which is incredibly stylish.
This weapon is considered dead nerfed: For a time, The Last Word dominated the PvP – more specifically, the PvP on PC. Here, the exotic revolver could reliably and especially quickly deal damage, and enemy Guardians fell in seconds like flies.
Bungie nerfed the popular Exotic in spring 2020, and the outcry was great:
- The damage was reduced – especially when aiming down sights
- The stability is now lower
- The range got a reduction
On Reddit and in the Bungie forum, posts spread with titles like: “The Last Word is now the worst weapon” (via Bungie). And on MeinMMO, we also looked for replacement weapons for the Exotic.
But the popular weapon is currently better than ever – at least if you play with a controller.
The Last Word is a PvP Monster if you heed this tip
This is what makes the weapon so strong now: Currently, The Last Word flies under the radar among Guardians. The reason is that many of the big Destiny names and well-known streamers are using mouse & keyboard on PC. And here, one must acknowledge, The Last Word is really just a shadow of its former self.
If you are on PS4 or Xbox One or plug in a controller to the PC, you have one of the currently best PvP weapons at your disposal.
In the last two seasons, The Last Word has been buffed significantly for controller players both directly and indirectly:
- Between the nerfs, a changed aim assist was hidden – if used correctly, this causes bullets to find their enemies almost magically
- The perk Hip-Fire Grip received an overhaul: The aim assist was increased by 15, the angle at which the aim assist engages was also increased, and the hitbox for critical hits is larger – all of this applies only as long as shooting from the hip
You can take excellent advantage of all these changes with The Last Word.
Keep this one tip in mind: Make sure to fire The Last Word from the hip – drill this one rule into your head. All improvements will then work together, and the revolver even offers additional bonuses.
Fundamentally, The Last Word is actually geared towards “Hip-Firing”. If you hit without aiming down sights, you automatically reload faster after a few hits, and your accuracy increases until the next reload.
The radical change now forces you into the hip-firing playstyle, but rewards controller players enormously. If used correctly, you have an almost unrivaled optimal TTK. With just 3 shots, you can take down a Guardian in PvP in 0.53 seconds – the popular 600 RPM auto rifles take 0.7 seconds. The relatively consistent critical hits from the hip will surprise you, I promise.
Guardians are into the Western Revolver
Why is the revolver so popular? The Last Word is one of the most famous weapons in the Destiny universe. It belongs to the so-called triumvirate of hand cannons and has fascinated with its design for 6 years.
The Western revolver fires fully automatic and releases the cartridges faster than you can reload. With every thunderous shot, the hammer is cocked like Clint Eastwood. Additionally, a particularly cool animation, where the weapon rotates around the finger at the trigger, creates gunslinger feelings.

The aesthetics perfectly emphasize the hip-firing playstyle. You feel like a grim cowboy entering a duel when the church clock strikes 12.
The Last Word is also a weapon that is very deeply intertwined with the history and lore of Destiny. The bloody story of revenge and two revolvers has already been dedicated a video of film length.
