When all the teasers and information about Destiny 2 flooded in during the summer of 2017, my initial reactions were mostly between “This sounds good” and “Aha, I’ll have to see how that looks in the final game.”
But when we received the news that random weapon perks would be eliminated, my reaction was: “That’s not good!” Schuhmann and I predicted a boring loot. After all, it was the hunt for God-Roll weapons that motivated many Guardians for months in Destiny 1. The discussions about which weapons had the best rolls kept Destiny alive.
That Bungie removed random perks from Destiny 2 is incomprehensible from this perspective. They justified the step by stating that they could respond faster to balance issues. Every weapon is handcrafted and can be adjusted individually.
This advantage has not yet played out in the history of Destiny 2. On the contrary: When the Prometheus Lens was completely overpowered in PvP, Bungie only reacted a week later—with an emergency fix that weakened the weapon too much. An update in 2018 will finally balance the Prometheus Lens.
That Guardians want random perks is currently proven by the Masterworks. These are new versions of old weapons that have an additional random perk. The Masterworks are well received and motivate players to grind for the best weapons. Bungie plans to expand and improve Masterworks.
It is probably unrealistic for Bungie to fully return random perks on weapons and armor pieces. The current weapon system is too fixed. Let’s hope that Masterworks will come to the forefront.
The wish for 2018 that random weapon perks fully return remains a pipe dream.
