The space that Destiny 2 will take up on your hard drive with Beyond Light will be significantly smaller than the current installation. But you will need to completely re-download and install the game for that.
What’s new? There will soon be some significant changes in the code of Destiny 2, which will ultimately have positive effects for you. With Beyond Light, there will be some technical changes. The result will include a significantly smaller installation size. For you, this means: more space on your hard drive. But how much does Destiny 2 shrink with the new expansion?
Up to 40% smaller installation size with Beyond Light
This is what Bungie says: The technical innovations are now available for Destiny 2, after the Bungie team decided to not aim for “Destiny 3”, but to invest everything in Destiny 2 (via Bungie.net).
Developers explain that the installation size of Destiny 2 will decrease by 30% to 40% due to the update. This reduction is achieved through various points:
- Filtering out unused or replacing content
- Installation size optimizations
- Moving content to the Destiny vault
Additionally, Destiny 2 will be faster and prettier with the engine upgrade.
How big is Destiny 2 with Beyond Light? Ultimately, it depends on which platform you are playing on. The installation size is expected to be between 59 GB and 71 GB. That is already significantly smaller than currently. As of now, on September 28, 2020, Destiny 2 is slightly over 101 GB on the PS4.
Players of CoD MW and Warzone can only laugh. Your shooter was at one point already 185 GB large.
This is the catch
New download required: You have to completely re-download Destiny 2 with Beyond Light. Especially for players with download limits or slow village connections, this is bad news since such a download may take a long time.
But with the preload for Beyond Light, Bungie wants to accommodate you.
When does the preload start? According to Bungie, early downloads for Beyond Light will be activated “sometime during the night of November 9 to 10.” That gives you at least 10 hours for the download before the new expansion starts – and also with the new weather:
With Beyond Light, Destiny 2 changes the weather and brings ice storms.
