Recently, the new expansion has launched for Destiny 2 and after initial skepticism, players find that the two universes fit better together than expected.
What kind of expansion is this? With “Renegades”, Destiny 2 has received a new expansion that is entirely in the spirit of Star Wars. With the Star Wars theme, the MMO aims to make a shift in direction in 2025, after the last expansion “At the Edge of Fate” flopped with players, garnering only 31% positive ratings on Steam, where it is “Mostly Negative”.
The popular Star Wars franchise is set to put an end to the negative trend and offer fans a change that performs in numbers well enough to secure the future of Destiny 2. Fans are expressing surprise.

Destiny 2 and Star Wars? It works!
How are fans reacting to the collaboration? Although there were likely some skeptical voices beforehand regarding the collaboration between the two franchises, the new expansion Renegades is being received well.
On Steam, the player numbers for the new expansion are indeed as low as they have ever been at the launch of an add-on (via SteamDB), yet the reviews from fans are significantly more positive than for the last expansion “At the Edge of Fate”.
Whereas “At the Edge of Fate” launched with a peak of 98,211 players, it was received much worse than the new Renegades expansion, which launched with just 71,278 players according to SteamDB. Renegades currently has a balanced rating, while 61% of the roughly 500 reviews on Steam are positive.
What are the players saying? Players are not only positively inclined towards the new expansion in numbers, but also in their posts. Players write about what they like about Renegades in their posts on Steam:
- amarouk_rex says on Steam: “Surprisingly, it fits together very well. […] It feels a bit overloaded to me and the number of enemies is somewhat exaggerated, but otherwise it really is fun again. It will only get annoying when it ends, then it’s time to grind your butt off!”
- Mav writes on Steam: “It’s still Destiny 2, but this time with Star Wars. I like the story, the familiar sounds and visuals from SW, so I can live well with the underlying structure. From me, a positive recommendation with the caveat that one should like the setting […].”
- Don DeViL finds on Steam: “Destiny 2: Renegades feels like a lost Star Wars chapter – epic, galactic, and full of atmosphere. […] Conclusion: A short but intense masterpiece that delivers Star Wars vibes without losing its Destiny identity.”
- Chris says on Steam: “The new Renegades DLC is a lot of fun. The campaign is coherent, […] overall a clear recommendation and no comparison to EoF [At the Edge of Fate].”
However, there are also some critical reviews, such as from Steam user CroX:
Bungie has abandoned their story and simply ‘implemented’ Star Wars into the game. […] it is starting to feel like the game is turning into a version of Fortnite where they have to collaborate with something to keep the game alive. It’s okay to be mad at my perspective […] after playing for over 4,000 hours […]. By the way, remove the damn portal system, it is one of the worst things Destiny 2 has added.
Even though Destiny 2 with Renegades has not yet been able to record a significant player number success, the expansion is being received better than At the Edge of Fate. This is an important step for the MMO, also to bridge the waiting time for Destiny 3, which may still take a long time: Destiny 3 is likely in development, but the release is still far off
