The Destiny 2 community is receiving more and more hints about an upcoming change to automatic rifles. However, the mysterious hints have not yet met with great favor, as they could mean a change for all those who like to shoot around without paying attention to their ammunition.
What did Bungie announce? On October 25, Destiny 2 provided a preview in a developer insight of future planned weapon tuning in Season 23 and beyond.
- For example, the raid exotic “Vex Mythoclast” will deal 200% more damage and the exotic pulse rifle “Revision Zero” will deal 100% more damage against champions starting in Season 23.
- The toxic exotic hand cannon “Dorn” will receive a wild catalyst in Season 23, which not only overloads the magazine to 40 shots but also adds +20 range and +10 stability and provides additional range, handling, and mobility when picking up remnants.
- Additionally, there will be another buff for automatic rifles, increasing damage against weaker combatants with red health bars by another 10%.
In particular, automatic rifles were used in this developer blog as an example of the overall weapon balance in PvE. Here, Bungie made a cryptic hint that immediately attracted considerable attention.
The latest DLC will also mark the end of the first saga of Light and Darkness:
“Bad news for people who can’t aim”
Bungie hints with a wink: Particularly, the winking smiley in the official announcement immediately drew the guardians’ attention as it could indicate a fundamental change in the gameplay mechanics in Destiny 2 with automatic rifles.
Automatic rifles use (for now 😉) primary ammunition
wrote Bungie in the developer insight on bungie.net
What could this change mean? The type of ammunition in Destiny 2 not only determines effectiveness but also the amount of damage a weapon can inflict.
After Bungie’s announcement, this could mean that automatic rifles might soon use only special or heavy ammunition instead of primary ammunition.
Some players are therefore concerned that their automatic rifles may soon not have infinite ammunition anymore and that they would once again face the challenge of aiming more carefully and thinking better about their shots.
However, other players do not believe this and are quite sure that Bungie has merely used the winking hint as a preparation for the upcoming DLC “The Final Form”.
This might really be behind it: On August 22, 2023, Bungie announced various weapon changes in the grand “The Final Form” showcase for the next DLC.
- One of them is a new pistol archetype that aims to combine the best of rocket launchers and hand cannons.
- The second is a new legendary automatic rifle archetype that can switch from slow-firing shots to healing bullets.
Therefore, most players are also sure that this announcement is merely about this new automatic rifle archetype, which could then come as a special ammunition weapon or perhaps even as a special/primary ammunition hybrid.
- The player xCr0ssh4ir commented: “I bet 100% that an automatic rifle is coming that uses special ammunition like “Eriana’s Vow” or has an alternate mode that uses [this ammunition].“
- This idea is also followed by Dark Rabbit who says: “I think it’s the new automatic rifle from “The Final Form” which can also heal when you hit teammates. Otherwise, it would be embarrassing to revert to the time when we had limited ammunition with this primary weapon type.“
When is the change coming? The possible change of ammunition type for automatic rifles currently raises many questions. It is also unclear when exactly it will be implemented in the game.
There is still one season planned until the next DLC. Therefore, if the players’ assumption holds true that it’s the new weapon archetype of “The Final Form,” it is unlikely that the change will go live in the upcoming Season 23 on November 28.
February 27, 2024, the release of the DLC “The Final Form,” seems more likely to many players.
What do you think of this possible change to automatic rifles in Destiny 2? Do you welcome the idea of a change in ammunition or are you concerned about the possible impacts on gameplay?
