There will soon be a major update for players of Destiny 2 in PvP. Those who demonstrate enough skill in the competitive mode of the Crucible will be able to rise up faster and increase their Glory rank.
Where does this information come from? In the current “This Week at Bungie” blog, the developers revealed more about upcoming changes for Destiny 2. They also gave insight into the innovations in PvP. By the way, the planned changes will be introduced with the launch of Shadowkeep and Season 8.
Getting boosts in rank will soon no longer be possible
How does the new Ranked system work? In the next season, players will receive a new system for leveling up in competitive PvP. Destiny 2 has always assessed the skills and abilities of players in the background. Factors such as your kills, assists, or damage dealt have always been important. Now they want to use this skill ranking and connect it with the Glory rank.
If your skill ranking is better than your current Glory rank, you will receive more points for your rank after a match in the Crucible. This is meant to ensure that you reach the Glory rank that matches your actual skill rating more quickly. The system continually adjusts to your performance. In short, this means: Those who play better will also climb ranks faster.

It is quite possible that players in a fireteam for the same match will receive different amounts of Glory points, as not every player necessarily performed at the same skill level. This is intended to allow players to reach ranks that correspond to their abilities faster. If you are a poorer player, you will soon not be able to be effectively carried up in rank by strong teammates.
How do you currently rank up in PvP? With the expansion “Warmind“, Bungie finally introduced competitive leaderboards into the game. Since then, there has been a distinction between “Valor” and “Glory”, that is between quick play and competitive. While you earn points for your Valor rank from all Crucible matches, points for your Glory rank are only earned from the competitive playlist in the Crucible.
Forsaken changed the distribution of Glory rank points starting from Season 4, which applied to both victories and defeats. This system was supposed to ensure that players could level up in Glory rank more easily and that defeats would not impact points too heavily. Because you lose points in competitive PvP for lost matches.
What problems did this create for players? The skill of the players was not necessarily a decisive factor in point distribution. When playing with the right team, one could quickly be carried up and soar in rank through winning streaks, even if they might not have contributed much themselves. Because at the end of a match, all players on a team currently receive the same number of points for victories.
The Glory rank has not always been a showcase of one’s skill. This will soon change with Season 8.

What else changes in the current playlists? The old competitive mode and the quick play playlist will disappear from the navigator. Instead, two new playlists will enter the game.
- 6vs6 Classic Mix – a replacement for the quick play playlist
- 3vs3 Survival – the new competitive mode (also with solo playlist)
If you play the Survival playlist, the Glory points will correspond to your skill level.

Community Manager dmg04 also announced on Twitter that the Control and Survival matches in 6vs6 will also be based on the skill of the players. The new “Classic Mix” will not be based on the new skill matching and will function similarly to the quick play playlist. There, you will be matched based on connection quality.
What do you think of this new system for competitive PvP?
