Surprisingly, on the evening of August 23rd, the servers for Destiny 2 went offline on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. An emergency server maintenance was deemed necessary after the error code WEASEL occurred frequently. It is still unknown when the maintenance will be finished and Destiny 2 will be back online.
A longstanding problem interrupts the beautiful PR campaign of Destiny 2 for “Forsaken”: The servers are suddenly offline. Guardians cannot fulfill their duties on Thursday evening.
UPDATE August 23rd, 21:09: The servers are back online.
This was not planned: As Bungie announced on Twitter, the servers were taken down for emergency maintenance. Players who are logged in will be returned to the title screen.
Looks like the WEASEL is in
The timeline: The exact reasons for the emergency maintenance are not known. A normal server maintenance was actually planned for this evening by Bungie:
- This maintenance started at 7:00 PM. It was supposed to proceed without a server downtime.
- However, it seems that “WEASEL” errors multiplied around 7:23 PM.
- Shortly after, Bungie took the servers offline. This happened around 7:36 PM our time.

What is the WEASEL error? The error code “Weasel” refers to an error that was previously labeled “Centipede”. These are errors related to players not being able to connect to the servers.
When will Destiny 2 work again? This is currently still unknown. We will keep you updated on everything important here at Mein MMO.
Incident before Forsaken
Unfortunate timing: Destiny 2 is currently at Gamescom 2018 and on the final stretch to promote the new expansion “Forsaken”. Just today, a stylish trailer describing the fate of Cayde-6 was released.
