Today, Destiny 2 reveals the second season in the Lightfall DLC. Season 21 will take players back to Titan, presumably into uncharted depths. But before that, Guardians can expect a server downtime that will bring the new content online. MeinMMO informs you about the downtime.
9:30 PM: The Destiny servers are still offline. Bungie is delaying the start of the Season of Depth piece by piece into the late evening. The Guardians had already put on their flippers and diving masks. We are waiting with you for the season start.
8:00 PM: The update is now downloadable. It is 7.1 GB on PC. On Xbox it is 10.4 GB. You can download it – but extended maintenance is still underway, so logging in is not yet possible.
7:15 PM: With moderate delay, the new update is currently rolling out. Some Xbox players are reporting a download size of 10.4 GB. Nothing is happening yet for PC.
The bad news is that Bungie has also announced an extension of the downtime. How long is not known – it was only stated: “Another update on this issue will be provided within an hour.” (via Twitter)
7:00 PM: The update should be here soon. Then, in the new Season 21, you can also discover these three gems. Conveniently: Your Warlock will no longer fall over during a handstand.
6:05 PM: Who would have thought that one could fish instead of shooting in Destiny 2? At least this activity is considered very relaxing – perhaps just what stressed Guardians need.
Meanwhile, the servers will remain offline until at least 7:00 PM. We will keep you updated on possible queues or new info in this article.
5:00 PM: The brand new season trailer is here and reveals what players can expect in the coming three months from Destiny 2 – and yes, it really does go underwater!

4:00 PM: Bungie has just started background maintenance. It will only be one hour until all Guardians can watch the new season trailer. Are you excited?
As a little preview: The new seasonal activity is probably called “The Depth” with weekly diving missions and is supposed to consist of three increasingly challenging activities. And fishing seems to play a role as well.
What you need to know today: Players in Destiny 2 are looking forward to fresh content today in the form of the new seasonal story for the second Lightfall season 21. It has already generated plenty of discussion in advance with its underwater setting.
- Tonight, the Guardians will learn how deep it really goes and whether they will actually discover the element water from a completely different angle.
- On top of that, there will be a lot of Quality of Life updates in Season 21 including ability adjustments aimed at stirring up the soup of the meta of Season 21.
- The content also includes a new dungeon that starts in Season 21 on May 26 at 7:00 PM. However, this must be purchased separately unless you already own the all-inclusive Lightfall plus Year Pass Edition.
However, before the Guardians can discover this new content, they must temporarily do without the loot shooter and the associated features during the server downtime. At least the waiting time today will be sweetened by the official trailers.
Maintenance on May 23 – All times for server downtime
These times are important today: Bungie has informed players via Twitter about the exact times. The planned downtime currently lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes.
This is the exact schedule for maintenance:
- At 4:00 PM German time, maintenance will start in the background on all platforms.
- Starting at 5:15 PM, the servers will go offline and players will be automatically kicked from all activities.
- The update 7.1.0 will be rolled out on all platforms during this time and can be downloaded.
- The expected login should once again be possible around 7:00 PM if everything goes well.
- The ongoing background maintenance is expected to end at 8:00 PM if all goes smoothly. During this time, however, you can already play the new Season 21.
Also keep in mind that third-party applications and the official companion app may also not be accessible correctly for a while, so you cannot use them.
What changes with Update 7.1.0 in Season 21
Continuation of the Lightfall story and seasonal content: Storywise, players will seasonally journey to Titan in Season 21. From there, the Guardians will receive a distress call from the presumed lost Deputy Commander Sloane.
In the teaser image, it can be seen that she is apparently possessed and there is speculation about what has happened to her. Additionally, it seems she has found a new friend who lives in the depths of Titan’s methane sea.
Here, the glaive Winterbite revealed that it is an enemy of the Witness. It will be interesting to find out if this being can become the last hope of the Vanguard to free the Traveler from the grip of the Witness.
Those who have decided not to purchase the second Lightfall Season 21 due to the price increase will also receive new content. Bungie announced that an important quest will come that will be available to all players who have purchased Lightfall. The quest will reward the legendary hand cannon which already lured prominently on the Lightfall cover.
- During this quest, players will explore the city to learn more about the nature of the Veil through Osiris’ research and newly uncovered data from the Ishtar Collective.
- As a reward for completing the last step, players will receive access to three new Strand aspects (one per class).
What else can players expect in Season 21? You can find more changes coming in Season 21 in our overview article about Season 21 in Destiny 2.
So once the servers go offline for the Season of Depth today, May 23, 2023, at 5:15 PM, the previous season pass with the rewards for the Season of the Resistance will also be updated.
You can claim the rewards from the Tower and HELM vendors. Bungie has informed in the forum that the engrams at the War Table will not disappear at the end of the season.
