In Destiny 2, it will be fiery in Season 17 with Solar 3.0 when the former “World Eater” returns in the new “Season of the Haunted.” But what exactly is in the new Season 17, which starts tonight? Is it just recycling? Or can players expect more? MeinMMO has taken a look at what lies ahead in the coming three months.
The return of the World Eater “Leviathan” is likely no surprise for some players who have been following the story closely. We also suspected after the voice lines from the exotic mission Vox Obscura that a return of the former Cabal Emperor Calus was becoming increasingly likely.
- In Season 17, the corrupted yet apparently abandoned Leviathan returns.
- It confirms that the former emperor and father of Empress Caiatl is aligned with the Darkness.
- By connecting the Leviathan with the Pyramid on the Moon, the Guardians must again gaze into the abyss to halt Calus’ schemes.
In the new trailer from Bungie for Season 17, we see the return of the imposing Leviathan. Furthermore, the “Season of the Haunted” also shows nightmares from Shadowkeep and new demons:
What is the Leviathan and who is Calus?
The Leviathan is a gigantic spaceship of the Cabal that once served as the personal pleasure craft of the exiled Emperor Calus and his loyalists. Calus himself always claimed that the Leviathan represents a mythical beast from “the dreams of the worms.” The ship is also referred to as the “World Eater” because it is so large that it can “devour planets” to process them into its favorite drink, a thick, purple “King’s wine” for Calus.
However, after Calus “gazed into the Void,” he was no longer the same. He is not only the father of Empress Caiatl, but also a narcissist who considers himself god-like and wants to be worshipped by all. He once encountered the Darkness and was apparently corrupted by it. Since then, he claims to know the “true truth” about the galaxy. Some time later, the Witch Queen seduced him with a powerful item, the “Crown of Sorrow“, to corrupt him. Now he is back, and the Guardians will likely learn more about his plans soon.
These are the contents of the “Season of the Haunted”
New Story: The Leviathan has appeared behind the Moon, and now the Pyramid of Darkness there is answering its call. It has changed and is overgrown with the plants of Darkness that some players already know from the exotic mission “Harbingers”. Now demons from long past, which one deeply regrets, manifest.
However, it is not just the Guardians who have to face their evil spirits. Crow, Caiatl, and Commander Zavala are also haunted by old memories.
- Crow will confront his former self, Uldren Sov, the murderer of Cayde-6.
- Empress Caiatl faces Ghaul, the former schemer from the “Red War”.
- And Commander Zavala must also confront a ghost from the past.
To better respond to the impending danger, the H.E.L.M. command center has also been moved into orbit around the Moon.
Players expect new nightmare hunts: In Shadowkeep, the Guardians already successfully banished the nightmares from the Moon. However, in the new seasonal activity, they must face them again and cleanse them with fire.
- In the “Nightmare Containment” activity, players enter the abandoned halls of the corrupted Leviathan. This is likely an activity for up to 6 players.
- The “Separation” activity also takes place on the Leviathan, but for this, you must fight through the labyrinthine underbelly of the Leviathan.
The next subclass 3.0 is Solar: Season 17 will ignite improved fire in the hearts of the Guardians. New customizable aspects and fragments will be introduced in the “Season of the Haunted”.
- Ignite a healing power with your Warlock or face your annihilation in the rain with a shattered dawn.
- Hunters have always been true gunmen. With Solar 3.0, they will shine even more with their skill and prowess.
- And Titans will become siege engines with Solar 3.0 – powered by the wrath of immortal suns. A confrontation with them is like the end of everything.
These weapons and armors await you: With the return of Calus, some once very opulent weapons have found their way back into the game.
- “Unauthorized” – the season pass weapon of Season 17 with ornament is an exotic pistol.
- New seasonal weapons:
- Scout rifle, rocket launcher, glaive, and a new legendary trace rifle.
- These old Menagerie weapons are returning:
- “Falconer” – once a Kinetic Hand Cannon
- “Drang-Baroque” – once a Solar pistol
- “Calus MINI Tool” – once a Solar submachine gun
- “Loved” – once a Solar sniper rifle
- A Solar sense that likely represents a relic weapon similar to the Synaptic Spear from the last season.
- As well as “Ghost Rider”-like armor sets that are meant to interpret the Solar 3.0 theme and, as already seen with Void 3.0, new Solar armor ornaments.
Did Bungie just recycle old content here? At first glance, one might assume so. Both the exotic season weapon “Unauthorized” from Destiny 1 and the old weapons from the Menagerie are not new. They were already obtainable during the “Season of Opulence” and are essentially returning from the content vault.
The story of Destiny 2 is constantly evolving, making the narrative likely the interesting part of the coming three months. And the new “Season of the Haunted” will focus entirely on the fight within the Leviathan, which has been corrupted by Darkness.
It will certainly be interesting for veterans as well as new players to discover how incredibly large the Leviathan is and how the once opulent ship now appears dark, gloomy, and overrun with corruption.
Whether players will meet Calus again is still uncertain. One thing is for sure: he is still there and apparently has a concrete plan. Whether it is his own or that of the Darkness, the Guardians might uncover it soon, and perhaps the Crown of Sorrow will return.
