In Destiny 2, a conflict is currently raging on two fronts – on Earth and Neomuna. But even in the Last City, a special surprise awaited the returning Guardians in the form of a monument that was four years overdue. MeinMMO takes you back to the past.
This is how Destiny 2 surprised its players: Currently, the Guardians in Destiny 2 have their hands full. A war is raging on two fronts that must be won. Both on Earth and in the new Lightfall location, Neomuna.
The Tower, the main social place in Destiny 2, is still standing and not only renovated in Lightfall, but also become a place of community. Enemies have turned into friends, and now one can conduct their Guardian business there among Cabals, Eliksni, and Awoken.
But in the now most beautiful corner of the renovated Tower, Bungie has finally placed a overdue monument for a once very popular NPC of the loot shooter – Cayde-6.
This is what his monument looks like: After the first battles, the Guardians flew back to the Tower to be surprised by Bungie’s “renovations”. The old Tower has been renovated, and a few of its holes that testified to the last battles were patched up.
In a newly created area, right next to the Commander of the Vanguard, a small idyllic corner has emerged, and a tree has been planted. There stands the overdue monument of Cayde-6. Players could also listen to several voice lines about him from still-living NPCs.
The new monument is a bust with a plaque that shows his weapon, the Ace of Spades. Below it, his name “Cayde-6” is written in concrete, making him more present than ever. Until now, there were only very hidden memories of him in the Tower.
- One memory was the Ace of Spades plaque, before going to Zavala. But it was so inconspicuous that Guardians walked over it without noticing.
- The second was in the ramen shop on the marketplace by Ikora. But again, you had to know exactly where to look because there was no further explanation.
The Ace of Spades is Cayde-6’s trademark in Destiny 2
What fans loved about Cayde-6: The Forsaken DLC in Destiny 2, the very first expansion, is long forgotten, and along with it one of the biggest gunslingers that has graced the loot shooter.
As Hunter Vanguard, he last worked in the Tower next to Zavala and Ikora in 2018. He never liked the job, but he dedicated himself to his Hunters with great passion.
His trademark: the Ace of Spades. Both as a symbol and as a weapon. To this day, the Ace of Spades, Cayde’s exotic hand cannon, remains one of the top weapons in the game that many players appreciate.
Although Cayde served absolutely dutifully, he always longed to get back out, away from the Tower … to be a free Hunter. But his duty rarely allowed him that.
But Cayde-6 was not only quick with the gun. He was also quick-witted and was regarded in Destiny as the “jokester with heart”. He always had a relaxed quip ready that made many players smile and did not take himself too seriously, whether in Strikes or story missions.
With his Exo charm, it was no wonder that he quickly won the hearts of many Destiny fans. And that was surprising, considering he never wanted to be a hero.
This is how Cayde-6 was killed: The Destiny gunslinger was not only brave and adventurous but also completely crazy and reckless. And that ultimately cost him his life in 2018 in the Forsaken DLC. He only wanted to blow off some steam with Petra Venj in the Prison of Elders. But, as it goes, it went horribly wrong. At that time, even the Guardians could do nothing about his fate and had to witness his execution.
Essentially, a gunslinger who had to die to become a hero:
It was probably one of the most dramatic moments in Destiny 2 when Cayde was killed with his own weapon by Uldren Sov, who was then possessed by Darkness. Today, Uldren Sov is known in Destiny 2 only as Crow and regrets what he did. Even if some veterans will never forgive him for it, until the end of the universe.
Particularly ironic in this context is the personal message from Crow that Guardians can listen to at the monument. There, he says:
I wish I could have met him …
says Crow in a voice line at the Cayde-6 monument
In a way, he has already met him – just not personally, but fatally with the hand cannon Ace of Spades.
New Light Guardians don’t even know Cayde-6: In 2023, hardly any Guardian knows the tragic fate of Cayde-6. Many players don’t know what to make of him or his name. They neither know his fate nor him. But apparently, Bungie wants to change that in Lightfall.
Is there perhaps still a Cayde comeback?
This is why Bungie might want you to know Cayde-6: With the monument, Bungie is once again drawing attention to a dead character after four years. One has to ask: Why?
- It could simply be a special gesture to fulfill a long-awaited wish of the veterans.
- Or Bungie might have something planned with Cayde that makes it necessary for as many players as possible to have already heard his name.
Whether there’s a comeback or not – in the end, time will tell. In Lightfall, Guardians still have four seasons of fresh content ahead of them. And also in “The Final Shape,” the last DLC, there will certainly still be a few “good old stories” to tell. Perhaps with particularly popular characters.
Did you know Cayde-6? And what do you think of the idea of the monument? Was it long overdue, or not worth mentioning? Feel free to write it in the comments.
