In Destiny 2, there is a problem that has plagued many Guardians for six years – the shader preview. This is often unreliable and cannot accurately represent how the coloring on gear and weapons actually looks in the end. However, this problem will soon be a thing of the past, according to Bungie’s latest announcement.
So the change was revealed: Bungie recently promised to interact more with the community, and this promise is now being fulfilled more and more.
Thus, the Destiny 2 community experienced a multi-streaming event on Twitch and YouTube on October 25, where Destiny streamer Datto had some well-known faces from Bungie as guests.
- First, the former community manager of Destiny 2, dmg04 aka Dylan Gaffner, was streaming with his Guardian and cleared his vault together with Datto.
- Then, among others, game director Joe Blackburn joined the stream and participated in Datto’s entertaining “Shader Game”.
In this casual game, Joe Blackburn also unveiled the exciting change for all fashion-conscious Guardians, which will soon allow players to customize their gear and weapons exactly as they envision, without having to keep experimenting and guessing.
Next year, the new DLC for Destiny 2 The Final Shape
will be released:
Shader improvement should finally ensure color clarity
A problem for 6 years: The unreliability of the shader preview in Destiny 2 has long been one of the most frustrating issues. Especially for fashion-conscious Guardians, who currently have 414 shaders available in Destiny 2.
- Players often struggled to choose the right colors for their armor.
- In addition, the fact that shaders in Destiny 2 often have curious color casts that are not visible in the preview.
- Out of a total of six possible colors, only four are currently displayed in the shader preview.
So, those who only look at the small shader preview often did not realize that it was misleading. This led to often disappointments and endless experiments to achieve the desired look. But thanks to the small revelation from Joe Blackburn, this could soon be a thing of the past.
Joe Blackburn explained to the viewers in the stream:
This is only a very small reveal […] but we have revamped the icons of the shaders for “The Final Shape.” There will be a completely new section in each shader icon that better describes the shaded color ranges. All six colors are represented. The colors are arranged differently in the new icons. You still need to know how armor looks to really evaluate it, but the highlighted areas take up a larger part of the shader, and all hidden colors are represented on the shader icon.
Joe Blackburn revealed to the community in Datto’s live stream
These changes could thus not only be a simple bug fix but also finally bring more transparency to the shader system of Destiny 2 after six years by allowing colors to be displayed more accurately and thus more user-friendly.
Moreover, players are happy that after Bungie’s withdrawal due to insults and hateful messages against employees, such a relaxed and informal exchange with Bungie through the game director is possible again.
Thus, the player HellChicken949 wrote on Reddit about the stream: “Joe, who actually interacts with the community, is probably the best thing he could have done, and I sincerely hope he is not harassed, because this opportunity to communicate directly with the game director is really something good.”
When will the change come to the game? Players will have to wait a little longer. The next DLC, with which this change will go live, will not be released until February 27, 2024.
What are your thoughts on the long-awaited shader improvements in Destiny 2? And how do you see the significance of direct communication between the game director and the community? Do you think this is a good possibility or do you believe it won’t last long? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments.
