The PvP area of Destiny 2 will not have private matches at launch. Ranked matches could come instead.
With “Rise of Iron,” private matches finally came to the Destiny universe. Since then, Guardians can compete against each other in self-created groups and hold tournaments.
Destiny 2 is taking a step back here. At the launch of the sequel, there will be no private matches in the Crucible. This is news we already reported a few weeks ago as a side note and which Game Director Luke Smith confirmed in a podcast with Kotaku.
The fact that there will be no private matches at launch in early September does not mean that they will not be introduced in Destiny 2 at all. They are planned for the future. They will likely be added with a later update.
Will there be ranked play in Destiny 2?
Luke Smith was asked about ranked matches in Destiny 2. His response was vaguer than regarding private matches.
There will definitely be no ranked matches at launch, but the studio is working on “something.” It will be something that caters to the desires of the ranked play fans. Something that allows players to show how they compare to other players.
What Luke Smith is specifically referring to will be shown in the future.
No Rumble at Launch
Another piece of info about PvP: It is already known that all game modes in the Crucible will be 4v4. This means that there will be no more 3v3 or 6v6.
Many Guardians have been asking since then: That’s great and all, but what about Rumble – what about a free-for-all mode?
The Community Manager Deej gave a clear answer to this question. There will be no Rumble at the launch of Destiny 2.
Interestingly, the developers always emphasize that none of this “will be available at launch.” This keeps the possibility open – and the hope of many Guardians alive – that these modes may still be introduced in the future.
