Recently, the Cosmodrome has returned as an iconic location from Destiny 2, which was originally supposed to be further expanded. However, it seems that the plans have changed.
What is the significance of the Cosmodrome? The Cosmodrome still elicits nostalgia from many Destiny veterans.
Not only because it was introduced in Destiny 2 with Beyond Light and Season 12 and can now also be experienced in the latest installment of the series. But because this is where the journey of many Guardians began, and many associate it with special feelings since Destiny 1.
However, this iconic location that Bungie brought out of the Content Vault has not returned fully to Destiny 2. Bungie originally planned to bring it to a state similar to Year 1 of Destiny 1 – at least that’s what the studio claimed when they announced the return.
But it seems the plans have changed or were not communicated clearly enough.
Bungie’s Plans for the Future of the Cosmodrome
What’s next for this location? What about the locations that were originally introduced with the Year 1 DLCs of Destiny 1? What about the large Colony Ship that came with “King of the Taken”? Or the Plaguelands from “Rise of Iron”?
Well, in short: Apparently, that’s it. The Cosmodrome in Destiny 2 seems to remain as it currently is (Season 13). It will not be further expanded or brought up to the state of Destiny 1. Bungie has now communicated this in the current “TWaB” blog.
Why this decision? Bungie also explained this in the current TWaB. When the studio first communicated the plans, they were still in early development and were unsure how far they would actually go with the return of the Cosmodrome.
They were sure that the Plaguelands would not return, but what about the rest? How much of the Cosmodrome would it take to create an appropriate location to introduce new players and offer veterans a good dose of nostalgia?
As the launch of Beyond Light approached, a choice had to be made:
- Should more time and resources be invested to bring the Cosmodrome in Destiny 2 closer to the state of Year 1?
- Or should the focus be on creating new experiences for Year 4 of Destiny 2?
Since they believed they had met the original goals, and knowing the community’s and the team’s hunger for fresh content, they opted for the latter – focusing on new content.
Why announce this only now? This was a mistake on Bungie’s part, as the studio itself admits. When this decision was made before the launch of Beyond Light, they failed to update the community on how the Cosmodrome experience would actually be expanded.
Here, Bungie clarifies again: Beyond the return of the two Cosmodrome Strikes in Season 13, the developers have no active plans to further expand the Cosmodrome. Instead, they will focus on new content.
By the way, if you’re wondering where the S.A.B.E.R. Strike in the Cosmodrome is, Bungie had to disable it and is already working on a fix.
What do you think of this decision? As a veteran or new player, would you have liked to see and experience more of this iconic location? Or do you think it’s better that Bungie is now focusing on completely new content?
