On Thursday, the release date for the new raid was announced in Destiny 2. Some players are convinced that this particular raid could change the understanding of the Destiny universe. It might finally reveal the greatest enemy yet. But who could that be? We investigated.
For years, players in Destiny 2 have known the eternal struggle between light and darkness. The darkness itself has always been seen as “the ultimate enemy” in the Destiny universe.
However, the story of Destiny has never been easy to decipher. So it probably won’t be that simple to dismiss light and darkness as the puppeteers. Perhaps something much greater than that awaits us.
In the swamps of Savathun’s Throne World lies a sunken pyramid. Venture in with your fireteam and confront an ancient threat trapped within…
Bungie teases the new Witch Queen raid
In one of the new Witch Queen trailers, players were already able to see some kind of creature that appears to be trapped inside one of the buildings in the Throne World. Perhaps a so-called Aphelion? Or even a creature that worships the darkness, possibly a materialized form of the entity?
What we know so far:
- In Savathun’s Throne World, the Guardians will learn that both darkness and light have secrets.
- A leak indicates that the raid will feature two bosses and likely include both Hive enemies and Taken. Whether that only means two encounters is uncertain.
- Savathun herself and her sister Xivu Arath will not be the opponents in the raid.
- The final boss in the raid will be called “The Witness.”
Lore-interested players from the Destiny 2 community have thus changed their perspective and believe that in the latest raid, one of these trapped creatures of darkness may await us. This might also soon reveal the true power: the so-called “entity”.
The Traveler is not “The Light”
The pyramids themselves, or the “Fleet of Darkness,” serve a higher power. Light and darkness are not foes, but merely cosmic forces. They are paracausal. And gradually, paracausality in Destiny 2 becomes a very effective tool to prevent the final shape.
What does the term “paracausality” mean in Destiny 2?
In the Destiny 2 universe, this term is used to refer to abilities, events, or entities. All effects and events have a preceding cause.
The darkness and light play a game. A much more complex version of “Game of Life” by John Conway. This game will consistently lead them to an end state dominated by a single, self-sustaining pattern that encompasses all others in the game. The rules of the game are the laws of physics as generally understood. The “new rules” that light and darkness have become form the basis of paracausality.
Paracausal thus means that while light and darkness obey the laws of physics, they ignore and circumvent the conventional cause-and-effect system.

The Traveler, therefore, is not the light. It merely uses it and passes it on to us. There is even some geometry in play: the light is a circle and the darkness is a tetrahedron.
Just as he is the voice and form of light, the entity is the voice and form of darkness. It has also provided the Guardians with a usable power: The ice power “Stasis”.
The entity has been around for a long time, and Bungie skillfully teases it repeatedly:
- Already in Destiny 1, Oryx apparently had contact with the entity (“The Shapeless”). From it, he gained the ability “to Take” and created the Taken.
- Calus tried to communicate again with the darkness and the entity through the Glykon. He has also previously mentioned having spoken with it when he was once banished to the Leviathan and wanted a deal. What became of that is still unknown.
- Savathun speaks with Cabal Princess Caitl in Season 13 about “the entity.” At that time, still disguised as Osiris, in a radio transmission on the Glykon.
- And in Season 15, it is mentioned in passing that the Taken are now again under their original master.
- Lastly, Mara Sov speaks to us and reports that “the entity” controls the Black Fleet. She also knows this power.
If you want to recall these important points in the Destiny 2 story, we recommend this lore video by AndyEdition. He also theorizes that the entity will soon play a larger role in Destiny 2 and explains why.
What does the entity want in the Destiny 2 universe?
Slowly, a larger whole is forming for the story of Destiny 2, and these many little hints even give a first outlook on what we might expect in the expansions after Witch Queen. According to Bungie, the final showdown between light and darkness is to come to the fore there.
Savathun, in any case, is currently playing into the hands of her sister Xivu Arath, the goddess of war. Conflict and war reign everywhere in the Destiny universe thanks to her. More war also means more strength.
Savathun always has a plan: We know that the entity seeks the strongest in this universe. It strives for the perfect form of strength, the “Final Shape.” And that’s also the name of one of Bungie’s upcoming expansions.
The only question is, why doesn’t Savathun have a problem with her sister gaining strength? Does she just want to be free? Or does she ultimately have a master plan, and the Guardians will find out on February 22, 2022, that all actions were cunningly planned by her down to the last detail?
Looking at the past, a random sequence of events is almost excluded:
What do you think? Will we soon encounter “the entity” in Destiny 2? And is this mysterious creature from the trailer actually an Aphelion or something completely different? Is the entity perhaps just another name for the darkness? Share your interpretation of the events in the comments.
