After update 6.3.0.5, many Guardians in Destiny 2 were dismayed to find that some of their titles and triumphs were missing. Prestigious completions, seals, and even catalysts were absent. This not only led to a massive influx of player reports but also to an emergency maintenance that lasted around 20 hours.
Have fun gaming and thank you for participating in the “server downtime challenges”.
What bug is currently plaguing Destiny 2? Initially, things looked good in Destiny 2 after the planned update on January 24. Right on time at 6 PM, the hotfix was complete. Guardians were able to log in again after about 15 minutes of downtime to explore the new weeklies.
However, they noticed that their collection was blinking. Normally, this happens only when there are unclaimed triumphs. Upon closer inspection, they were shocked to find that not one or two new triumphs had been added, as suspected. On the contrary, a large number of many triumphs had seemingly been unintentionally reset during the update.
- Some players reported via reddit that after the update 6.3.0.5, they had only half of their former triumphs left.
- Prestigious titles such as the raid triumph “Petras Durchlauf” from the “Last Wish” raid or triumphs of the Illuminated seal from the “Garden of Salvation” raid were also missing.
- According to further reports, progress on catalysts for exotic weapons was also affected.
Destiny 2 promptly reacted via Twitter to the feedback. Nevertheless, players were very worried about their missing achievements.
- Titles are what defines a Guardian and represents their skill outwardly.
- Currently, there are exactly 28 of these individual and prestigious titles in Destiny 2.
- Some of these triumphs require players a lot of effort and time to obtain.
Bungie then announced that they were already investigating the problem. As a result of the error, they extended the ongoing background maintenance from 7 PM to 11 PM.
Triumph bug necessitates emergency maintenance: Shortly after, the information followed that the Destiny servers would now have to be completely taken offline again. Around 8 PM, the Destiny servers went offline for emergency maintenance for the second time on January 24. Some players were surprised by this and removed from ongoing activities. Those who started later received the error code “Cat”.
The following was communicated by Bungie via Twitter:
Destiny 2 will be taken offline as we investigate an ongoing issue that causes certain triumphs, seals, and catalysts to lose players’ progress. Stay tuned for updates.
Bungie communicated this to its players via Twitter
Cause of the error still unknown: What led to the triumph bug is unknown. Currently, we only know that the last update included a few triumph-related changes.
Since there were no adjustments to the most bugged exotic in Destiny, the Telesto, it could be that these triumph adjustments had unintended consequences. (Patch notes for update 6.3.0.5)
- For the difficulty level “Legendary”, progress on various triumphs and challenges was recorded.
- A problem where the Glorified title symbol did not match with other seals was supposed to be fixed.
- No progress was recorded for the triumph “Ritual of the Season” with heavy grenade launchers instead of pulse rifles.
- For the equipment triumphs “Opulent Weapon Shape” and “Nightmares Take Shape” from the Season of the Haunted, weapon shaping was not calculated correctly.
- And in step 7 of the “Revision Zero” quest (“The Form of the Hidden”) weapon shaping is now accounted for correctly.
As soon as new information is available regarding the cause of the error, we will promptly update this article on MeinMMO for you.
UPDATE: How long will the Destiny servers be offline?
Destiny 2 has already been offline for about 20 hours due to the bug. And you will have to wait further today.
- Players in Germany were unable to log in for the entire evening of January 24.
- Also, in the early morning hours of January 25, there was still no end in sight for the emergency maintenance.
- Finally, Bungie shared a rough timetable. They estimate that the emergency maintenance will last at least until 12:00 – 1:00 PM today.
- The final update, which fixed the bug, however, only went live at 4 PM.
We will update this article with further information on the current server status:
Some players like CrazyDragon already suspected that Bungie would not be able to avoid a so-called “rollback” of the servers. At least that would ensure that Guardians would regain their hard-earned triumphs, seals, and catalysts.
Usually, developers fiercely resist such a step because it takes away several hours or even days of gameplay progress from all players. Moreover, this intrusion is often associated with a loss of trust from the community.
As suspected, Bungie then officially confirmed the rollback of its servers on Twitter. Obviously, it was not possible to fix the problem otherwise or reverse it in any way.
The rollback also explains why the game remains offline. The developer likely wants to ensure that players are not further able to earn armor or triumphs that they would then lose again.
Server rollback resets progress: Due to the server rollback, all player accounts will be reset to the state as of 5:20 PM. Everything that happened in the game after January 24 at 5:20 PM will therefore no longer count retroactively. This means players will lose a total of 145 minutes of playtime plus the loot from this period due to the rollback.
In the meantime, the rollback has been live since January 25 at 4:00 PM, and the Destiny 2 servers are back online.
What were players doing before the emergency maintenance? Many players were already farming missing Depths weapons in the Legacy raid “Deep Stone Crypt” at the time of the emergency maintenance for nearly 2 hours. These had been made accessible by the developer for the first time with the last update.
The rollback might restore all triumphs, titles, and catalysts, if all goes well. However, plans gained from the raid as well as other achievements from the 145 minutes are likely lost. Although the latter is probably the lesser evil.
Were you affected by the triumph bug? How many triumphs were missing for you? Or did you not even notice the error? Feel free to leave us a comment here on MeinMMO about what you were doing in the game at that time and what you might lose again due to the server rollback.
