The mysterious merchant Xur delights the hearts of players in Destiny 2 every week with his offer of great weapons. But what happens when the deal is too good to be true? Then the unfortunate merchant may be held hostage by a horde of greedy players until everyone has stuffed their pockets with top loot. How this bizarre situation came about and whether Xur was ever able to return home, you can find out here on MeinMMO!
Who is Xur? Xur is a mysterious merchant who first appeared regularly in the original Destiny and delighted players with coveted Exotics. Xur’s weekly appearance on Friday is always a little event for Destiny players, especially since the merchant now offers not only Exotics but also legendary weapons.
The prospect of comfortably buying a powerful Legendary with good perks instead of grinding for it is tempting for many players.
What happened to Xur this time? In his current offer, the tentacle-faced Xur had a powerful, legendary hand cannon named ‘True Prophecy’. This weapon had excellent perks and qualities, making it an immediately coveted item among players, although not as crazy as the currently popular ‘Plan B‘.
However, since the merchant wanted to leave as usual on Tuesday, some players simply decided to hold him hostage so that even more gamers could enjoy his offer.
Xur’s offer became his downfall
What did the players do with Xur? Since Xur’s offer was really good, a player and reddit user named klip_twings wanted to spread the joy to even more players. Many players only find out about Xur’s top offers when he’s already gone.
Xur actually leaves again every Tuesday to return on Friday with a different offer.
But klip_twings found a way to prevent the merchant from departing. By stubbornly keeping an instance open without logging out, the merchant could not escape. Instead, he was besieged by hundreds of players who snatched the highly sought-after weapon from his hands.
Did the poor guy ever go home? To prevent the instance from resetting, other players took turns with klip_twings to ensure that someone was always still in the instance. So Xur stayed in the game for two more days before the instance was eventually reset by the weekly server update.
Only then could Xur finally escape from his captors. If he has a family, they must have been greatly worried about him. Whether he will fare better next time if he has similarly great loot is questionable.
How was the action received? As unpleasant as the experience may have been for poor Xur, it was well received by the players, who are now enjoying an excellent hand cannon. Initiator klip_twings posted a little statistic about the event on reddit. Some of the actions were:
- Over 350 people grabbed the weapon
- 20 people got nothing because they were too late
- 1 player wanted to have food delivered to klip_twings
- 1 player offered to buy him a beer
- Over 15 people saluted
- Over 5 people made hearts in the air
- Over 50 players danced the ‘Cat Ear Dance’
- More than 200 players spammed kneeling to express their gratitude.
So much for the kidnapping of Xur. Have you ever experienced something similar? If so, let us know in the comments. If you have obtained good loot, then try the strike ‘The Corrupted’. We have a useful guide for that.
