In Destiny 2 saw the return of a raid exotic from Destiny 1 in September 2023, the auto rifle Necrochasm. However, players were disappointed with the weapon in PvE. That could change now, as clever players have noticed a hidden synergy with the weapon.
What kind of item is this?
- “Necrochasm” is a raid exotic that was already present in Destiny 1. At that time, many people were disappointed with the weapon: It was mocked as the “pea shooter”. While the Necrochasm fired quickly, it dealt very little damage. With the return of the raid “Crota’s End” to Destiny 2, the weapon also returned.
- Although the weapon caused a stir in PvP, PvE players found the auto rifle in Destiny 2 to be too weak and not worth the effort. This is because the item only triggered the famous explosion if you eliminated enemies with headshots; otherwise not. The “explosion” of a mob is considered ideal for taking out swarms of enemies.
- Without this explosion from body kills, players found the weapon unsuitable. It was said on reddit: Destiny 2 has no place for the Necrochasm, as there are already much stronger alternatives.
Player discovers synergy with other exotic weapons
This has now been discovered: A player has now uncovered a secret that Bungie has hidden in the Necrochasm.
If a target suffers from a debuff of a “Weapons of Sorrow”, then the enemy also explodes with normal body shot kills from the Necrochasm.
If an enemy is already suffering from the poison of the Thorn or the Necrochasm and then dies, they explode, which can take out additional mobs.
This effect is just as intended by Bungie, as is clear from an emote from the developer Mercules, who shares a relevant video on Twitter and draws attention to the effect.
Mercules was a content creator who deeply engaged with the mechanics of the shooter before his time at Bungie. He was regarded as the absolute weapon expert for Destiny. Bungie hired him in March 2022 as an “Associate Weapon Designer” (via twitter).
4 cursed weapons in Destiny
What are the “Weapons of Sorrow?” These weapons are infamous instruments of destruction that have been twisted and cursed by Hive magic. They are associated with destruction and tragedy. They corrupt their bearers and entice them to commit evil acts. In the game, they poison or curse their victims.
Especially around the “Thorn” and its bearer Dredgen Yor, there is an excellent backstory that “My name is Byf” has put together.
The 4 known Weapons of Sorrow are:
- Thorn
- Necrochasm
- Touch of Malice
- Osteo Striga
What does this mean in practice? The Necrochasm could become an exciting weapon in practice through the synergy when another player uses another “Weapon of Sorrow”. Particularly suitable is likely the submachine gun “Osteo Striga”, as it leaves a 9-second debuff on the enemies.
If the player with the Necrochasm eliminates such a weakened enemy, the explosion could quickly clear a room.
Also, the Necrochasm itself can trigger a debuff on the enemy and then cause the explosion through body shots: the time window is only 2 seconds.
