For Destiny 2, the new expansion “Beyond Light” will be released in November. However, this week the developers have given a first glimpse of the new map Europa. But it is already quite old, as a user on reddit proves.
What is Europa? Europa is an ice moon that will enter the game with “Beyond Light”. In advance, 5 areas have been presented that can be entered on Europa:
- Eventide Ruins
- Asterion Abyss
- Cadmus Ridge
- Charon’s Crossing
- Beyond
- In addition, there should be areas under the ice whose extent is not yet known
Together with these zones, a picture of the map was also shown. This picture was immediately recognized by reddit user ZoeyVS. Because a rough drawing of Europa can already be found in a book published 5 years ago.
Sketch of Europa in the book “Treasure Island”
What kind of book is this? Treasure Island with a preface by Cayde-6 is a book that is part of The Taken King Collector’s Edition of Destiny and was published in 2015.
This book contains a sketch that is very similar to the map of Europa:

The map Europa
You can clearly see that the outlines and structure are very similar. Although some details do not match, that should come as no surprise. After all, it is a sketch that is also 5 years old.
Furthermore, changes could easily be explained by lore. After all, landscapes change over time, especially when they are made of ice.
Nevertheless, Bungie seems to have succeeded in hiding the future of the game early in artworks. The book is about the Cryptolith and the Exo-Stranger, which will also be themes of the new expansion.
How long has Europa actually been known? In a video this year, old footage of Destiny in development was presented. Even then, there was concept art featuring an ice planet. Presumably, it was already Europa back then.
But not only Europa was hinted at early on. Since a DLC from Destiny 1, we know that the villain Oryx has a sister. This sister will be the main enemy of the expansion in the coming year 2021.
Bungie often plans far in advance when it comes to new content.
If you want to get more in tune with Beyond Light, a new trailer was released on September 22 featuring two interesting characters.
