The MMO shooter Destiny 2 is supposed to run on Battle.net, even though it doesn’t exist anymore. It was renamed in March, but not even Blizzard seems to care.
At the end of the presentation of Destiny 2, Mike Morhaime, the head of Blizzard, appeared on the big screen. Morhaime announced, that Destiny 2 will run exclusively on PC through Battle.net.
This caused confusion. Not only because it was an unexpected move, but also for another reason. The problem: Something like “the Battle.net” doesn’t exist anymore.
Huh? I thought Battle.net no longer exists?
On March 24, Blizzard officially renamed Battle.net to “Blizzard App” or “Blizzard Launcher.” So why does the head of the company still call it that?
It wasn’t a mistake by Morhaime to call the launcher “Battle.net.” In the Blizzard FAQ regarding the Destiny 2 launch, the name “Battle.net” appears as well, mentioning “Battle.net” 5 times, never referring to it as “Blizzard App.”

What’s going on? Did Blizzard decide that the renaming was silly and is now backtracking?
“No.” A Blizzard spokesperson explained to the US site Polygon: “It is still called Blizzard Launcher. We made an exception for this announcement.”
He did not specify the exact reasons for making this exception.
Destiny 2 is a double exception – according to the FAQ, Blizzard does not plan to let “other non-Blizzard titles” run through Battle.net. However, they do not completely rule it out for the future.
Mein MMO believes: You can assume that Blizzard itself knows that everyone still calls it “Battle.net” and that everyone knows what is meant by it.
If Morhaime had announced: You can launch Destiny 2 through the “Blizzard App”, people might have believed that something completely new was coming their way.
This exception shows that Blizzard itself knows that the “name change” from the established term “Battle.net” to “Blizzard App” cannot be implemented overnight with a stroke of a pen. It will take a while for the new name to sink into the consciousness of the gaming community.
And some will still simply call it “Battle.net” in 10 years – probably even internally at Blizzard.
