Some players somehow suspected it in Destiny 2 and today we have certainty. One of the rarest and most effective Exotics in PvP, the Vex Mythoclast, is getting the expected nerf.
Since the return of the raid Glass Vault and the last buff, the Exotic has been a topic of discussion in the Destiny 2 community. Initially, it was far too weak in Season 14 to be considered the proverbial ‘carrot in front of the nose.’ No one wanted to hunt it.
Then the Exotic was improved by Bungie in a relatively short time. After the buff, the resurrected legend from Destiny 1 was the top choice in both PvE and PvP. At least for the players who had the rarest weapon in Destiny 2 dropped at all. Apparently, it was too good a choice in the eyes of Bungie.
Bungie has now officially announced the nerf
The Destiny 2 community manager dmg04 announced on Twitter that Bungie finds the Vex Mythoclast “a bit too hot.” This makes it clear that Bungie is also not satisfied with the current dominance of the Vex Mythoclast.
When is the Vex patch coming? The patch for the Vex Mythoclast is scheduled for December 7, 2021, fitting with the 30th Anniversary update. Until then, players can still enjoy the dominance of the Vex Mythoclast.
Bungie’s balance philosophy has changed: In the early years of Destiny, Bungie wanted a “living game” where there was at least one powerful weapon each season. Now, balance is much more important.
However, a raid Exotic should still feel strong, but not dominate the game too much. If suitable counter weapons are lacking, it significantly disrupts the balance. Especially in PvP.
Here’s why the Vex Mythoclast is too strong:
- The exotic fusion rifle behaves like an automatic rifle and has unlimited ammo.
- The buff to range and stability ensured that the Vex sweeps everything away with just a few shots.
- Once kills are collected, “Temporal Conflux” activates and grants even more power.
- “Particle Disintegration,” the current season mod, additionally provides a staggered damage increase.
- It can also be used as a sniper rifle, covering long-range combat as well.
It’s by far the deadliest weapon in the Trials: When you look at the fact that the Vex Mythoclast alone accounted for almost 6% of all kills in the latest Trials statistics every week – twice as much as all other weapons – despite being so rare, it shows: the weapon is currently really too strong and disrupts the balance.
Will the rarest Exotic now be useless?
The community manager emphasized one thing particularly in his tweet. The goal of the upcoming patch for the Vex Mythoclast will not be to break it. It simply cannot remain as powerful as it currently is. Many also welcome the decision. After all, it did not come as a complete surprise, especially since the Vex is far too present everywhere. Calls for a nerf were already a major topic right at the start of Season 15.
However, players fear Bungie will make the rare Exotic useless again with the adjustment. They wish that the weapon is only nerfed in PvP.

It is still unknown what Bungie will change: Bungie wants to provide more details at a later time. Destiny 2 has rarely had good luck with weapon nerfs. When a nerf came, it usually meant that the weapon was no longer usable afterwards. And for the Vex Mythoclast, it would be the second end of a legend.
However, players can almost assume that the Vex Mythoclast will not be in too bad a state in December. The developers have improved in making careful and above all gradual balance changes. It will likely not become as bad as before its necessary rework in Season 14. Back then, it was already in a state where no one wanted to use it voluntarily.
What else will be nerfed in December 2021?
The Hunter’s “insta-kill” ability – the Shatterdive – will also be heavily nerfed in December. Game designer Kevin Yanes revealed this and indirectly referred to a bet by Twitch streamer Datto.
All of this is part of Bungie’s plan to shift the meta in Destiny 2 back more towards gunplay. Whether this will succeed with the upcoming adjustments, players will soon be able to try for themselves.
