In the PvP of Destiny 2, matchmaking places a lot of weight on connection quality. Bungie discusses the goals of player search.
What is more important to you in the player search in PvP? A good connection quality to your teammates or a balanced skill level among players? In Destiny 1, this topic often led to heated discussions in the community, and Bungie occasionally adjusted the balance between these two components.
How Bungie handles this in Destiny 2 is revealed by the crucible design lead Lars Bakken.
The player search aims to fulfill two goals
According to Bakken, there are two design principles for the crucible in Destiny 2:
- They want to provide a great experience for players who enjoy competitive PvP activities.
- They want to ensure that players have fair and enjoyable PvP matches

To achieve these goals, there are some changes to matchmaking compared to Destiny:
- First: All PvP matches are played in 4v4 format.
- There are two playlists – for fast, fun games and for competitive games.
- Matchmaking places a greater emphasis on connection quality.
- But skill is still an important component in finding worthy opponents.
In the beta, the two PvP playlists use the same matchmaking settings. But at the launch of Destiny 2, it will be possible to adjust these individually.
By the way: Your skill will also be tracked individually for each PvP playlist.
Bakken summarizes: They always want to ensure that the connection is solid. However, they also look to make sure that the matches are as fair as possible.
Bungie announces at the end of this statement that this is the first discussion about Destiny 2’s crucible matchmaking, but it certainly won’t be the last.
