In Destiny 2, you will soon be able to be strong and beautiful. However, the Guardians are already worried about the new transmog feature coming in Season 14. Timegating and real-money involvement are causing headaches.
Every Guardian knows the problem of often having to choose between good looks and high combat power. You find armor that looks really good, but the stats just don’t fit the build or are simply worthless.
This is what Guardians are looking forward to: When Season 14 of Destiny 2 starts in May 2021, real transmog will be integrated into the MMO shooter. This will be made possible by the return of Ada-1 to the Tower. The Exo-lady brings the “Armor Synthesis” feature along.
Transmog is useful when the new armor is stronger or has a higher level, but doesn’t appeal to you visually. This allows players to look however they want without sacrificing the power of new items.
For transmog, you transform the look of armors into so-called universal ornaments. You then adorn your currently worn (legendary) equipment with them, giving it the identical appearance of the ornaments. The good news is that you don’t have to hoard the armors in your inventory. It is enough to have registered the look in your collection: Bungie now finally knows whether you can destroy old armors in Beyond Light.
Players should be strong and beautiful in Destiny 2, but …
This is causing headaches: Destiny-style, Guardians cannot whimsically transform armors from the collection into universal ornaments that they can then apply to their worn armor. You need a new resource for that: synthesis tokens. You receive the tokens from bounties or you pay for them with silver (real money currency).
Thus, transmog already has a bitter aftertaste for players even before its release. These 2 things are causing concern:
- Timegating: Often, tasks in Destiny 2 cannot be completed all at once or are capped at a limit per week. This would mean for you that no matter how diligent you are, if Ada has only 2 bounties per week, you can only craft 2 ornaments per week. This would mean, in this example, that to create a whole armor set, you would need more than 2 weeks.
- Fear of costs: Those who have no time to grind (or no desire) can reach into their pockets and shortcut their way to transmog. Guardians are now worried that Bungie will limit transmog or set the grind very high to draw silver from their wallets.
If Bungie were to rely too heavily on timegating and high costs, transmog would be ruined for many right at the start. It’s really a shame, after all, some Guardians have been waiting for this since 2014.
Keep in mind that we currently do not know how high the silver costs will be in Season 14 and how noticeable the timegating will be. By the way, once you have created an ornament, it remains permanently unlocked. The same applies to shaders, which no longer occupy a slot in the inventory and are permanently unlocked.
Killing gods and looking good is both endgame
Many Guardians are aware that Destiny 2 also has to generate revenue for Bungie – especially since many areas in the shooter became free-to-play. However, the fear that transmog will be heavily monetized is also evident on MeinMMO. We regularly read such comments under articles on this topic:
It’s just amazing how Bungie still wants to keep players engaged with grind with something as normal and simple as transmog and hopes to pull money out of players’ pockets.

How important appearance is: For many players, the look of their Guardian alter ego is one of the most important things in the game. Bungie also knows how important appearance is to the Guardians.
Every week they hold a fashion show in their blog post (TWaB). There, videos, artworks, or particularly cool designs from the community are showcased and also honored with a rare emblem. The Eververse is filled with skins, shaders, and other cosmetics every season. The alternative ornaments for exotics especially make fashion Guardians salivate.
To let you play around a bit with transmog right at the start of Season 14, Bungie will distribute a starting supply of synthesis materials. How quickly it gets used up will be revealed in May 2021.
