In Destiny 2 the Legendary Shards are a new currency demanded by the Exotic vendor Xur. Here’s how you can obtain them, these are the locations.
With the release of Destiny 2, Xur, the Agent of the Nine, craves new items: In the sequel, he no longer wants Strange Coins, but Legendary Shards. This is a new currency that will always be displayed at the top right of your character menu. The symbol is purple shards:
According to the item description, the Legendary Shards are remnants of powerful items. They are used to upgrade equipment or trade for other items. This means: you need them for infusion and for Xur.
Finding Legendary Shards – Here is where you can farm them
Even before the release of Destiny 2, the locations of the Legendary Shards have been leaked (we may update this article if necessary):
- When you dismantle a legendary item, you receive 2 Legendary Shards
- When you dismantle an exotic item, you receive 5 Legendary Shards
- Strike bosses – (rare)
- Nightfall strikes
- Flashpoints
- Chests scattered throughout the world (Planetary Chests) – (rare)
- “Lost Sector” chests
- Raid chests
- Raid encounters
- Faction Engrams (also Trials Engrams)
So you will receive the Legendary Shards in various ways – by exploring the open world or playing endgame activities. In the endgame, your hunt for this currency is likely to accelerate as you will frequently obtain legendary and exotic items which will yield several Legendary Shards when dismantled.
Xur and Legendary Shards in Destiny 2
Xur will hardly change in Destiny 2. He remains a special vendor who only appears on weekends at random locations and sells exotic goods.
The main innovations regarding Xur are:
- He no longer appears in the Tower or the Reef as he did in Destiny 1; instead, he can appear in all four new worlds of Destiny 2.
- He demands Legendary Shards instead of Strange Coins now. The prices of his Exotics are still unknown.
