In Destiny 2, farming the weekly pinnacle loot for more power has been the top priority for years. However, a leak has hinted that this may soon no longer be necessary. Bungie is reportedly planning to completely eliminate the power level grind in the future. MeinMMO tells you what is true and why players would celebrate this.
How do you level up in Destiny 2? Currently, players in Destiny 2 have two ways to raise their power level.
- On one hand, there is the so-called “true” power level. That is the power that you earn exclusively through pinnacle loot, which remains even when a season ends. It has a maximum that was at power level 1570 in season 17.
- On the other hand, there is the so-called artifact power. It is temporary and not permanent. After the respective season ends, the power leveled through the artifact disappears again. However, you can exceed the current maximum power level cap of Destiny 2 with it. So, for example, you can level up to 1600 or even higher.
Leak suggests planned elimination: Just before season 18, Liz from the Twitter channel Destiny Leaks released a leak suggesting the elimination of the true power level in Destiny 2. Something Bungie allegedly has been planning since season 14.
“As far as I heard, the team was already planning to eliminate the power level in [the season of the Splicer] and make everything a big artifact level. However, the main progression is supposed to come from activities and not from bounties.”

Thus, she hit the nail on the head. Because less annoying grind, which is also based on randomness, has been frustrating players in Destiny 2 for some time.
The double system is confusing: Above all, the fact that you level up almost twice in Destiny 2 confuses some players.
With the true power level system, you are completely dependent on loot luck, i.e., RNG. If the needed item doesn’t drop in the right slot after several weeks, you’re simply out of luck. In the worst case, the character doesn’t reach the maximum power level in the respective season at all.
Surely, there are many activities that also drop pinnacle loot and provide another chance. But that is also annoying grind in the endgame that requires just as much time. Time that some players do not have.
Leveling through the seasonal artifact level is more convenient: If you only use the artifact system for leveling, then there will be no power level grind in Destiny 2.
- You level up through the seasonal artifact only by playing and collecting XP continuously. It happens almost automatically.
- You no longer have to worry about how to get the needed pinnacle loot in the right slot.
- And since all players are raised to the same base power level repeatedly, the infusion system for armor and weapons could also be eliminated.
In the Destiny community, there has been frequent discussion about Bungie needing to adjust its leveling system. After all, it would make things easier, and the annoying hard grind would be gone. A wish that would primarily benefit casual players.
Currently, this is nothing more than a rumor. But if it turns out to be true, it would fundamentally change the way Destiny 2 works. It would be another step away from the hard grind. It would also take away some of the old identity of the loot shooter.
