Will the “Giftspritze” from Destiny 1 make a return in Destiny 2? This scene from the “Curse of Osiris” trailer strongly suggests so.
A week ago, the “Curse of Osiris” trailer for Destiny 2 was released. Clever guardians immediately spotted old exotics from Destiny 1 that will likely return, such as the Jade Rabbit and Telesto. Additionally, the trailer undoubtedly features the Graviton Lance.
However, these three exotics are probably not the only Destiny 1 items that will be huntable again with “Curse of Osiris.” Because in the official trailer, there seemingly hides another exotic weapon: The Thorn!
That can only be the Thorn, right?
If you look closely, you can spot a weapon in the hands of the back guardian in the trailer from 00:53, for a split second. This gun strongly resembles the outline of the Thorn. We have marked the spot here; otherwise, you can see the scene in the thumbnail:
The YouTuber MoreConsole zoomed in on this weapon and placed a picture of the Thorn next to it. This screenshot is from him:
The guardian definitely has a hand cannon in his hands that strongly resembles the Thorn. However, this is not definitive proof of a return – it is also possible that a new hand cannon is being introduced, which has a similar outline to “Thorn.” Since Bungie likes to hide “secret hints” in trailers or graphics for future content, it is quite possible that we will be able to play with the old Giftspritze again soon.
What is the Thorn actually?
“Thorn” was an exotic hand cannon in Destiny that dominated in PvP towards the end of Year 1. It was said that the Thorn ruled, the toxic queen in the Crucible.
No other weapon drove guardians to such fury as the Thorn did, as this hand cannon killed slowly.
When two guardians meet in PvP, the duel usually goes like this: One wins and the other bites the dust. The winner then retreats briefly to regenerate before throwing himself into the next battle.
However, the Thorn inflicted damage over time, allowing it to bring the victorious guardian to his knees as well. Moreover, it delayed the regeneration and revealed his position with its ticking damage.
The other stats of the Thorn were also formidable, making it an easily usable and nasty killing machine. Especially in the Trials of Osiris, you could be sure that at least two of the three opponents had the Thorn.
In Year 2, the Thorn was left behind, until it returned in Year 3 with “Rise of Iron.” However, it was then just a shadow of its former self, with which a few nice kills could still be achieved, but it could not compete with the powerful hand cannons Palindrome and Eyasluna.
In Destiny 2, hand cannons currently do not have a good standing. The return of the Thorn in “Curse of Osiris” may change that…
