Destiny 2: Is the grind worth it after the 3 new top weapons of Season 7?

Destiny 2 received three new pinnacle weapons in Season 7. But is the grind for these new firearms worth it? How do these weapons fare with the players?

These are the weapons: As in previous seasons, in the Season of Opulence there are three new pinnacle weapons that can be earned through various activities:

  • the grenade launcher Wendigo GL3 through Vanguard
  • the bow Silence in Gambit
  • and the sniper rifle Retribution through the Crucible (PvP)

Many Guardians have now earned these weapons and report their experiences. Which new pinnacle weapons are worth the effort?

Wendigo GL3

What can the Wendigo GL3 do? The Wendigo is an adaptive grenade launcher with Arc damage. The perk Explosive Light increases the explosion radius of this grenade launcher by collecting spheres. Additionally, damage is increased by about 70%, and the grenades blind enemies. Up to 6 grenades (a full magazine) can be buffed with Explosive Light.

How do you get this grenade launcher? You will have to do quite a bit. In the Vanguard Strike playlist (and ONLY there), you need to:

  • achieve 1,500 kills with grenades
  • land 500 multi-kills with the grenade launcher
  • score 15,000 points (kill enemies). Your own deaths hinder progress

Is the grind worth it? In short: Definitely for the Wendigo. Provided you enjoy playing PvE.

Many players consider it one of the best, if not the currently best and strongest legendary PvE weapons for the power slot.

Whether against groups of enemies, majors, or bosses – the Wendigo shines everywhere and makes even many exotics look outdated.

Furthermore, depending on the perks of your armor, the Wendigo can significantly increase survivability, as you can still collect spheres with this weapon even when your Super is already full.

By the way, this strong loadout also relies on the Wendigo in the power slot:

Silence

What can this bow do? Silence is a Solar precision bow. The perk Gambit of the Shooter grants a huge draw speed bonus (3x as fast) for a short time (7 seconds) when you land precision shots from the hip with the bow.

How do you get Silence? You need to do the following in Gambit or Gambit Prime:

  • achieve 1,000 kills with the bow
  • land 500 headshot kills with the bow
  • and earn 600 medals

The rarer or more challenging the medals, the more they contribute to progress. You can check the corresponding Gambit medals in the Gambit Triumphs menu. This step can take a lot of time.

Is the grind worth it? If you enjoy playing bows – yes. This is because Silence is currently considered by some experts to be the best legendary bow in the game.

Before you land a critical hit with Silence, it is essentially just a normal bow. After that, the bow only takes about 0.2 seconds (instead of 0.617) to fully draw again and can be fired again.

The hitbox of the bow is very generous, especially when firing from the hip, so you can essentially fire accurately from the hip continuously after triggering the perk. Precision shots are also no problem and reset the perk’s timer each time.

The bow thus combines the high damage per shot of this weapon type with the rate of fire of a hand cannon and plays very smoothly.

Anyone who has enjoyed using bows in PvE so far will likely enjoy this new pinnacle weapon. Even in PvP, bow enthusiasts can achieve decent results with it. However, if bows have not convinced you so far, the grind may turn into a real chore, which may not really be worth it due to numerous good alternatives.

Retribution

What can the sniper do? Retribution is a kinetic sniper rifle. The special perk Reversal of Fortune brings the fired bullet back into the magazine after a short time (2 seconds) if you miss – and only one bullet.

If you fire a second projectile before the first bullet is returned, only one round will return to the magazine. Reloading will deactivate the perk, and you won’t get the bullet back. So only reload after the projectile has been refunded.

Additionally, Retribution features the “HINTERHALT SLH25” scope, which is excellent for fights at short to medium distances.

How do you get this weapon? For this rifle, you will need to do the following in PvP:

  • earn a total of 3,500 Glory points in the competitive playlist. Losses do not take points away from you
  • land 300 kills with a sniper rifle
  • achieve 50 headshot kills with a sniper rifle

Is the grind worth it? Not really for PvE players. The perk is not useful against AI enemies, and there are far stronger sniper alternatives.

Even in PvP, opinions are divided. Some players believe that the special perk of Retribution allows for a more aggressive sniper playstyle, as you can risk a missed shot.

However, many feel that this new pinnacle weapon is disappointing. For instance, the well-known PvP player tripleWRECK summarizes the views of many fans in a tweet.

Other Guardians criticize the overall handling of the weapon. It feels somewhat sluggish compared to others. Retribution also generally outclassed by some other sniper rifles.

Moreover, the perk is pointless for the target audience – namely truly good PvP snipers. None of them would choose their weapon based on whether they might miss a shot.

And newcomers or players who aren’t great at sniping won’t really benefit from the weapon because

  • they won’t become better snipers by relying on missed shots
  • and they would already struggle with the hard grind for the weapon, which requires good sniper skills
