In Destiny 2, the winter event “The Dawning” is in full swing. The joy of snow and the frustration of microtransactions have broken out.
On December 19, the Dawning event started, transforming the Tower and the Farm into a winter wonderland. It is snowing there, you can launch lanterns into the sky, have snowball fights, and everything is festively decorated. Christmas spirit is coming to Destiny 2!

But is this winter event really just a festival of bliss? How is “The Dawning” received in the community? On reddit, there are currently several threads on the front page where Guardians express their opinions.
Guardians are throwing their light and snowballs around – it’s well received
The top thread on reddit with nearly 5000 upvotes is full of praise for The Dawning: The Inferno in the Crucible is said to be great; Bungie should keep it even after the event.
In the Inferno, your abilities recharge much faster, which means you fight almost exclusively with your super attacks. You are throwing your light all around, which is both chaotic and fun.
After all the criticism of previous PvP events like the Iron Banner and the Trials, which were basically just standard modes with different tokens as rewards, the Inferno finally brings variety to PvP. While some Guardians may find “Mayhem” too chaotic, many players write that this mode brings fresh air and is also excellent for relieving stress.
Moreover, the snowball fights during the Dawning are “cooler” than expected. You can even knock down enemies with snowballs in Strikes, which temporarily stuns them and deals damage.
In the Tower and especially in the Farm, you can really enjoy bombarding each other with snowballs. They provide a welcome, new gameplay experience.
A Redditor kyle007US points out a big advantage: You can grab a snowball in the Tower and throw it right in Tess Everis’s face. Because Tess often causes frustration among Guardians, as she hides all the delicious Dawning items behind Dawning Engrams – and these can be obtained through microtransactions.

Many Guardians are currently complaining on reddit that the Eververse and the microtransactions are too prominent. One user calls the Dawning the “Black Friday in the Tower”. He shared this video, showing a group of Guardians rushing to the Eververse because Tess Everis has an initial gift for you:
Another Guardian looked closely at the new offerings in the Eververse. He concluded that the Dawning event is entirely based on encouraging players to engage in microtransactions. Because: You can earn the items, and the most exciting items, like exotics and the new armor, can be acquired for glimmer, but these are far too expensive, so you could never earn enough glimmer in three weeks:
- There are 15 new legendary armor pieces (5 per class). Each piece costs 1200 glimmer. That totals 18,000 glimmer. Most Guardians will struggle with this hurdle alone, as 18,000 glimmer is extremely high.
- Additionally, there are two exotic sparrows that cost a total of 5000 glimmer, as well as several other legendary sparrows. Altogether these cost around 12,000 glimmer.
- And how expensive the exotic ships, ghost shells, and the emote are remains unknown. But just the legendary exclusive items cost thousands more.
In total, 81 items can drop from the Dawning Engrams. You would need to open hundreds of engrams to obtain all of them. And to buy them in the weekly rotating glimmer offerings, you would need to invest an impossible amount of playtime in Destiny 2.
Furthermore, with experience points, you do not earn Dawning Engrams, only the standard engrams for the Eververse.
In other words, if you want all Dawning items, the game essentially forces you to reach for your wallet and buy Dawning Engrams. Especially since this is also the fastest way to get the pile of glimmer you need to get a specific item in the glimmer offer.
Two more things that are being criticized:
- There are four new exclusive shaders of the Dawning. However, since shaders are consumables, you must either use them sparingly or stock up a large supply – if you like them. Because whether they will still be available after the event remains to be seen.
- Some complain that the Vault needs to be expanded. So many new items with the Dawning, but so little space to store them!
