Destiny 2 premiered on Steam on October 1st. With the “Shadowkeep” expansion, Bungie went live on the PC platform today, and player numbers are exploding shortly after. The MMO shooter immediately entered the Top 3 of the Steam charts with the launch of the Free2Play version.
- Currently, there are 214,100 players online at the same time (October 1st, 10:09 PM). This is only for Steam and does not include PS4 and Xbox One. The cumulative numbers across all platforms will be much higher
- This means that only the long-standing games CS:GO and Dota 2 are ahead of Destiny 2 in the current player numbers on Steam
- Many user reviews are coming in, which aggregate to a “mostly positive” for Destiny 2
- Since 7 PM, the worlds are gradually opening up for players, but the launch is not without server issues, error codes like “Weasel” and “Beaver,” and a queue: “Destiny 2 is currently busy,” it says
Player Numbers and “Destiny is currently busy”
Destiny 2 is currently in 3rd place on Steam. After the game was able to reach first place in pre-orders in the past weeks, a strong start was expected. However, it could only be speculated how successful it would be.

JUST A MOMENT … And every day, the groundhog greets. This MMO launch is also not spared from queues and error codes. Destiny 2 is currently busy. In the background, there is a mysterious order. For now, patience is all that helps.

The shop page on Steam seems to be overloaded for most users, which is why even the purchase or download of Destiny 2 is not possible for some at this moment.
The first user reviews for Destiny 2
These should of course be taken with caution, even though Destiny 2 should no longer be a completely new game and one can find information about the advantages of the shooter in many places (especially here at MeinMMO!). It is still too early to evaluate the expansion itself.
This is how well Destiny 2 is received: So far, strong. Many speak of a new era. Destiny 2 is rated very positively on Steam and many veterans want to entice new players. Some have migrated from the Blizzard launcher and are happy to be on Steam now.
Whether the positive mood remains will be seen in the coming days and weeks. However, the negative reviews so far are almost exclusively about the current server problems.
The best free-to-play game of all time. Destiny 2 is a very well-optimized, beautiful game with tons of PVE and PVP content. I highly recommend this game.
Gaaldo on Steam
Destiny 2 is one of the best first-person shooters released in this generation in terms of core gameplay. The gunplay, movement, abilities, environments, sound design, and everything else related to the current gameplay is incredibly well polished and very appealing. (…)
Fortunately, it finally feels like it is turning for the better. The separation from Activision and the departure of some controversial design leads have resulted in Bungie demonstrating a clear vision for the franchise for the first time. In their own words, they are making Destiny an action-MMO that takes place in a constantly evolving universe.
