Destiny 2 sends many weapons into retirement with Beyond Light, but that doesn’t protect them from a nerf. We now know that the Mountaintop will be hit twice this autumn.
This is what weapon retirement looks like: Destiny 2 introduces the so-called weapon retirement (sunsetting) with the major expansion Beyond Light. Your gear will receive a kind of expiration date and, when that is reached, cannot be infused further, meaning it cannot be enhanced and will fall short in high-level content.
This change is not liked by many Guardians at all. In our MeinMMO survey, you concluded that retirement hurts. According to Bungie, this is necessary, as it allows for the future creation of powerful weapons that won’t haunt the sandbox forever.
However, as it has now turned out, it is not enough for some weapons to just be banished from the endgame. A controversial piece, the Mountaintop, receives a nerf for retirement in Season 12.
This weapon will still be nerfed in retirement: The Mountaintop is a grenade launcher and belongs to the long-extinct top-tier weapons. These special firearms were linked to tough quests and rewarded eager players with legendary weapons that are actually exotics.
At its reveal shortly before Season 5, the weapon was only mildly ridiculed, as “who needs a grenade launcher in the kinetic slot?” As it turned out: everyone. The Mountaintop is basically a rocket launcher that uses special ammunition and is now firmly entrenched in PvP and PvE loadouts.
Even in Season 11, it ranks among the best weapons you can equip. Many players are dissatisfied with it in the Crucible, as they can theoretically be taken out from any distance with a single shot or just accidentally run into a rocket that has turned into a mine.

This is what Bungie says about the troublemaker: Recently, Bungie presented the alternative to top-tier weapons. Guardians mocked their (recycled) appearance on Twitter. Community Manager Dylan “dmg04” Gafner chimed in on such a tweet and casually mentioned a nerf for the Mountaintop:
According to dmg04, some tuning for the Mountaintop is on the way. They don’t want to kill the weapon, just balance it.
We currently don’t know how the balance adjustment will look on November 10. Next month we will learn more about the changes to the sandbox in a preview.
However, we already know that with Beyond Light, the long-neglected 110 hand cannons will be revised (TWaB September 10).
