The new exotic sniper Whisper of the Worm can now be earned in Destiny 2. It is one of the currently best weapons in the game. To make the weapon even better, you can upgrade it to the Masterwork version. How to do this is explained in this guide.
Bungie is making a real highlight in the run-up to the upcoming Forsaken expansion for Destiny 2. In a time-limited challenging quest, the exotic sniper rifle Whisper of the Worm can now be earned.
Already as a regular Exotic, this weapon is immensely powerful and embodies perhaps the strongest weapon in the game right now. But with an exotic Masterwork catalyst, the weapon can be made even stronger.

Whisper of the Worm – The Path to Masterwork
What you need initially: To upgrade the Whisper of the Worm to a Masterwork, you first need the Black Spindle reincarnation itself and the corresponding Masterwork catalyst. How to get this exotic sniper and its catalyst is explained in our guide:

How to make progress for the Whisper of the Worm catalyst
Catalyst progress probably behind time lock: According to current findings, a maximum of 36% progress can be achieved for the catalyst per week.
This progress can only be advanced in the Heroic version of the Whisper mission (Power Level 400) and consists of three parts that must be completed for maximum percentage yield. These are 5 hidden chests, an Oracle puzzle, and the successful completion of the Heroic mission itself.
By the way: The Heroic mission “Whisper” has weekly changing modifiers:
- Arc/Solar/Void Burn: This is essentially a type of elemental burn or singe modifier that increases damage from certain elements and changes every seven days.
- Blighted Hunger: Grants bonus damage based on the Whisper catalyst progress of the fireteam leader.
5 Hidden Chests
In the labyrinth of the Whisper mission, a total of 5 hidden chests are concealed. Each of them gives you an IO token and a Blighted Essence, providing you with 2% progress for leveling the catalyst when first opened weekly.
Thus, you will receive 10% of the necessary progress in this phase.
Please note: All five hidden chests must be found and opened so that you can open an additional sixth chest in the following Oracle phase.
The Oracle Puzzle
The sixth chest: Once you have opened all five preceding chests, you have the chance for a sixth chest. In the labyrinth, there is a Vex portal where Oracles spawn, provided all five previous chests have been looted.
By solving the Oracle puzzle, which strongly resembles the Glass Chamber from Destiny 1 and even provides a brief glimpse into the legendary Vault of Glass, you can spawn a bonus chest that grants you another Blighted Essence, hence 2% progress, and three IO tokens – again, only when first opened weekly.
The Oracle puzzle: When you are at the portal or jump on it, seven Oracles appear that must be destroyed in a specific order within three sequences.
First, they all appear one after the other and reveal their position; then they all appear at once. Do not shoot at them until all seven are lined up. If you see less than seven during this, you have missed a chest somewhere.
The Oracles are numbered from left to right 1-7 – 1 on the far left, 7 on the far right. Destroy the Oracles in the respective sequence in the following order:
- Wave 1: 1, 3, 5
- Wave 2: 4, 6, 7, 3, 1
- Wave 3: 7, 3, 1, 6, 4, 2, 5
If you accomplish this, the sixth chest will spawn.
Bonus: However, the chest has even more in store on its first opening:
- You will receive exotic blueprints for a ship. To complete these, based on current findings, you have to finish the Heroic Whisper mission with all three elements of the burn modifier. So you will likely need at least three weeks for this. Whether further quest steps will follow is currently unknown.
- Players who already possess the Masterwork catalyst for the Sleeper Simulant will also receive the IO-JYS data required for the second step in leveling the Sleeper catalyst.

Finish the Heroic Mission
If you successfully complete the Heroic mission Whisper by sending the three bosses to the virtual afterlife, you will receive 12 additional Blighted Essences and thus 24% progress for the Whisper Masterwork catalyst.
Good to know: The first time you will need to play the Heroic mission a second time to maximize the weekly progress. Because the 12 Blighted Essences for the successful completion are only given after you have received the catalyst – that is during the second run.
Progress for Whisper of the Worm catalyst behind time lock
If you have successfully mastered all three challenges, you can achieve 36% progress – the account-wide maximum for one week. Therefore, you will need at least three weeks in total until you can upgrade the Whisper of the Worm to Masterwork.
Note: As in Destiny 1, the exotic sniper rifle is available in a time-sensitive mission. The anomaly on IO and thus the Whisper mission (normal and heroic) is only active weekly from Friday 7:00 PM to Monday 7:00 PM.
